A-League Round 16 Betting Tips

Wellington Phoenix vs Newcastle Jets

Friday, 5:15pm AEDT

Wellington Phoenix come into this clash off a loss last time out against Brisbane Roar. It was a disappointing loss on the road, but they were certainly due after going nine league matches unbeaten in what was the best streak in the competition. They now return home to Wellington where they’ve won four of their past five games with their draw against league leaders Sydney FC being the exception.

Newcastle Jets will be looking to bounce back from a last start loss against Melbourne City. They were no match for one of the better teams in the league and have now lost six of their last seven league matches with a draw against Brisbane Roar splitting up those defeats. The Jets remain glued to the bottom of the table and are everyone’s current pick for the Wooden Spoon.

This is the easiest pick of the round for us, touch wood. The Phoenix are clearly the better of the two clubs and their chances of a win will only be bolstered by being the home side. They’ve fried way bigger fish than the Jets this season and we expect them to win this without too much trouble.

Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC

Friday, 7:30pm AEDT

Melbourne Victory were really poor losers once again last time out when they fell to Adelaide on the road by one goal to nil. That was Victory’s second consecutive loss by a single goal, which has seen them drop to seventh on the table. The good news is they’ve just announced the signing of Marco Rojas who will bring a bit of optimism heading forward.

Sydney FC were the recipients of the bye last weekend, which will have them in good stead to attack their remaining fixtures this season. Prior to their week off they were winners on the road against the Jets, which was their third win on the spin. Sydney have only dropped points twice this season and look almost like certainties to finish the regular season on top of the table.

Melbourne Victory will be buoyed by the addition of Marco Rojas, although it will certainly take time for their front men to click. In a way, they get a bit of a free swing this week as no one expects them to get anything out of this fixture. For us, we have Sydney being too strong and expect them to extend their winning streak with a relatively straightforward win on the road.

Western United vs Adelaide United

Sunday, 6pm AEDT

Western United were emphatic winners at home last weekend, putting three early goals past the Mariners to cruise to an easy victory. It was a fantastic result post bye and will lift their spirits heading into another home fixture this weekend. Western United have enjoyed a relatively successful inaugural season in the league and currently sit in fifth spot on the table.

Adelaide United were finally able to get back onto the winners list last weekend when they defeated a poor Melbourne Victory side by a single goal. That win snapped what was a four game losing streak and will hopefully get their season back on track. They come into this in sixth spot on the table and have a chance to improve further here.

Both teams could use the three points here as neither are in fantastic form coming in, despite both being winners last time out. That said, we were surprised to see the Reds start as road favourites considering their only recent win was against a poor Victory team. We’ll be taking the odds available on the home side here.

Western United

$2.88
