A-League Round 5 Betting Tips
Western United vs Western Sydney Wanderers
Saturday 7:30pm, GMHBA Stadium
Western United come into this game off a thrilling win over Melbourne Victory last time out. They went two goals behind before the 10-minute mark, only to score the next three goals to record an amazing win. They’re now in fourth spot on the ladder with seven points from four fixtures and look like a team that can be competitive at the business end of the season.
The Wanderers entered Round 4 as the only club to have won all three of their fixtures. However, their perfect record came to an end as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Brisbane Roar. It’s fair to say they were actually lucky to get a point out of that fixture considering they were beaten 43-57% for possession and 11-20 in the shot count.
Both teams have been in good form to start the season, but we have to side with the home team here. Western United have shown great character already in their short history and going off last weekend’s form, we see them as the front runners to win this fixture and further improve their position on the ladder.
Melbourne Victory vs Wellington Phoenix
Sunday 4pm, AAMI Park
Melbourne Victory would have to be thoroughly disappointed with last weekend’s result against new rivals Western United. They looked a sure thing to get the win when they were up 2-0 in nearly as many minutes, however, they were simply outplayed from that point onwards and went on to lose 2-3 in front of their home fans. It’s been a tough start to the season for Victory, but they’ve got a great chance to get back on the winners list this weekend.
Wellington Phoenix look to be in all sorts of trouble early in the season. They’ve lost all four of their games and are the only team in the league without a point next to their name. It’s fair to say that they’ve had plenty of opportunities to get off the mark but conceding 2+ goals in three out of four fixtures to date simply isn’t going to cut it in such a competitive competition.
Although they’ve looked far from their best this season, we have to fancy Victory bouncing back with a win this weekend. They’ve got plenty of quality in their team and at home, we expect them to take advantage of the winless Phoenix with a fairly comfortable result.
Adelaide United vs Brisbane Roar
Sunday 6pm, Hindmarsh
Adelaide United return from their week off to host Roar at home. Prior to their bye they defeated the Jets on the road 2-1, which came after their impressive FFA Cup triumph. Despite their recent success, the Reds remain outside the top six with just three points from their three fixtures to date and have lost their only game on home turf this season.
Brisbane Roar were impressive in their 0-0 draw against the league-leading Wanderers last time out. As mentioned above, they led both the possession and shot count by some margin but were unable to make it count with a decisive goal. Roar remain winless this season, although they’ve been good value in a couple of their games so far.
Adelaide certainly bring in the better winning form, however, Roar have been impressive without getting a result this season. They proved last weekend that they can match it with the best in the competition despite being on the road, and we believe they’re every chance of claiming their first win in the league this weekend.
