AFL Round 20 Saturday Betting Tips
Essendon Bombers vs Port Adelaide Power (1:45pm, Marvel)
The Bombers keep on ticking over the win column and look destined for September action as a result. Last weekend they survived a scare against the bottom-of-the-ladder Suns, eventually prevailing by 10 points. The Bombers are now two games and percentage clear of the ninth-placed Bulldogs and can just about clinch a finals berth with a win on Saturday.
Port Adelaide’s season has taken a wrong turn in recent weeks to the point now where it looks likely they’ll miss out on finals. Last weekend they suffered yet another close loss, going down to the Giants in Adelaide by a single point. The Power are still within touching distance of the top eight but will need to have a strong finish to the season.
This is a huge match for both clubs for different reasons. The Bombers can sure up a finals spot with the win, while the Power can keep their finals hopes alive if they prevail. These clubs always seem to play out high-scoring affairs, with four of their last five meetings ending in 190+ totals. We’re expecting another goal-fest on the quick deck at Marvel Stadium.

GWS Giants vs Sydney Swans (2:10pm, GS)
The Giants recorded one of their better wins of the season last weekend when they held off a desperate Power outfit in Adelaide. It was yet another huge performance from Toby Greene who finished with 30 disposals and 126 rankings points. The Giants have now won two in a row and find themselves in fifth spot on the ladder with a chance to move into fourth momentarily.
The Swans season just continues to go from bad to worse as they now sit in 15th position on the ladder with just six wins on the year. Last weekend it was the Cats who got the better of them, defeating them by 27 points in Sydney.
The ‘battle of the bridge’ certainly doesn’t have much hype around it this time with both clubs in completely different positions on the ladder. The Giants have won by 40+ points in each of their last two meetings with the Swans, and there’s no reason why that won’t be the case again on Saturday.
Fremantle Dockers vs Geelong Cats (4:35pm, OS)
The Dockers couldn’t record back-to-back wins as they went down comfortably to the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium last weekend. They conceded a whopping eight goals in the first quarter, which meant it was pretty much game over. The Dockers are still a mathematical chance of playing finals but will need to find some serious form in a hurry.
The Cats overcame a slow start against the Swans in Sydney last weekend to run home 27 point winners. Scores were level at the SCG at half time, but the cream well and truly rose to the top in the second half with Duncan and Dangerfield having huge games (25+ disposals, 2+ goals each) and Tom Hawkins bagging five goals in his 250th.
Anything other than a Cats win would totally shock us. The Perth factor seems to have some punters taking the Dockers to keep it close, but we’re not having a bar of that. More than happy to be on the Cats to win by 3+ goals.
Melbourne Demons vs Richmond Tigers (7:25pm, MCG)
The season couldn’t come to an end any quicker for the Demons who suffered yet another loss last weekend. This time it was the Saints who got the better of them, despite the Demons leading for much of the night. They’ve still only five games for the season and are lucky the Suns are in the competition, otherwise they’d likely be bagging themselves the Wooden Spoon.
The Tigers were red-hot in their Friday night fixture against the Magpies in Round 19. They absolutely flew out of the gates and brought an intensity that was unrivalled for much of the night. They eventually finished up as 32 point winners, but that score line certainly flattered the Magpies. The Tigers are now in fourth spot on the ladder and look every bit like a Premiership contender.
The Tigers are heavy favourites to make it six wins on the spin and we aren’t going to bet against it. We’re surprised to see that they’re only 27.5 point favourites and will be backing them in to cover that quite easily.

Adelaide Crows vs St Kilda Saints (7:40pm, AO)
The Crows were on the wrong end of an inspired Blues performance last weekend, losing to them at the MCG by a comfortable 27 points. They’ve now lost four of their last five games and remain in the top eight by only percentage. At this point, If the Crows end up making the finals it seems they’ll simply be making up the numbers.
The Saints made it two from two under caretaker coach Brett Ratten when they defeated the Demons at Marvel Stadium last weekend. They were down early but managed to come over the top of a lethargic Demons outfit late in the fourth quarter. Interestingly, the Saints remain a mathematical chance of making finals despite being down in 13th spot on the ladder.
We’re expecting a big response from the Crows at home on Saturday night. They’ve been down for a couple of weeks now and must get back to winning ways to avoid slipping out of the top eight. Happy to back them in to bounce back and cover the three goal spread.
