AFL Round 18 Sunday Betting Tips
Geelong Cats vs Hawthorn Hawks (1:10pm, MCG)
The Cats have it all going their way at the moment and look destined to finish on top of the ladder. They’re four points and percentage clear at the top and have a favourable run of games to come. Last weekend they bounced back from their loss to the Bulldogs with a win over the Saints, which was their 13th win from 16 games.
The Hawks are hanging onto their finals hopes by a thread and need a huge lift in performance to ensure they don’t miss out in September. They’re currently in 12th spot with seven wins and nine losses and have a chance to go just one match outside the eight with a win on Sunday. The Hawks were fairly good last time out, defeating the Dockers by a comfortable 31 points.
Geelong vs Hawthorn always seems to be a cracking fixture regardless of where the two teams are on the ladder. We’re expecting another close game on Sunday with the Cats edging out the Hawks.
Melbourne Demons vs West Coast Eagles (3:20pm, TTP)
The Demons just haven’t been able to close out games all season and last weekend was no exception. They found themselves in a real arm wrestle with the Bulldogs, but eventually fell short by eight points. It was the Demons 11th loss of the year to go with just five wins. Now second last on the ladder, it’s all about playing for pride for Simon Goodwin’s men.
The Eagles are also coming off a loss last week, which was a disappointing one to the Magpies. The reigning premiers looked good for the win for most of the night but were eventually overrun by a determined Collingwood outfit. All is not lost however, with the Eagles sitting in third spot on the ladder with a chance to jump back into second with a win on Sunday.
It’s pretty hard to have any confidence in backing the Demons on recent form, although we do believe they have the ability to keep this one close. Much like the earlier Sunday game, we expect the better side to record a narrow win.

St Kilda Saints vs Western Bulldogs (4:40pm, Marvel)
The last game of the round should be an interesting one. The Saints had a busy week off the field, parting ways with coach Alan Richardson. Brett Ratten will step in for his first of six games as caretaker coach, which should make for some interesting viewing the rest of the way. The Saints have managed just six wins for the season thus far and will be hoping to achieve similar success to the other clubs that have parted ways with their coach mid-season.
The Bulldogs kept their finals hopes well and truly alive with a narrow win over the Demons last weekend. It took a monster performance from star Josh Dunkley to get the job done. He had 39 touches, 15 tackles and two goals, in what was the best individual performance by any player this season. That win was the Dogs third in a row and places them in 11th spot on the ladder with a chance to jump to ninth with a win.
If there’s going to be a blowout win today, it’s likely to be in this match. The Bulldogs are playing far better footy than the Saints and will be desperate to keep ticking over the win column in a bid to make the finals. Happy to be on them to cover the spread.
