AFL Round 16 Sunday Betting Tips

Carlton Blues vs Melbourne Demons (1:10pm AEST, MCG)

The Blues recorded one of their best wins in years last weekend. They travelled to Optus Stadium in Perth as HUGE underdogs against the Dockers, but somehow managed to come away with a four-point win. What was even more remarkable was the fact that they did it without their captain and clearly their best player in Patrick Cripps. It was the Blues third win for the season, and it got them off the bottom of the ladder.

The Demons were unable to negotiate a win against the Lions at the GABBA last weekend, despite leading by a couple of goals mid-way through the third term. They were eventually outgunned by the young and talented Lions, losing by 33 points after an anti-climactic last quarter. The Dees have been the real disappointment of the 2019 season and have just four wins next to their name.

We’re expecting this to be a grind of a match between two teams that struggle to score at the best of times. Both will be desperate to claim four points and will likely go in with a defensive mindset. We have this match going well under the line.

North Melbourne vs St Kilda Saints (3:20pm AEST, Blundstone Arena)

The Kangaroos were the surprise packet of round 15 with their demolition job of second-placed Collingwood. They looked an inspired side on a mission right from the first siren and put in one of their greatest four quarter performances in recent memory. Jack Ziebell was great with his 25 touches and three goals, as was Ben Cunnington (37 disposals) with his contested work in the midfield. North Melbourne remain an outside chance to play finals with their 6-8 record, which has them in 11th spot on the ladder.

The Saints put in a much better performance last weekend than they did against the Lions the weekend prior, although they still came away empty-handed. It’s been another season of disappointment for die-hard Saints fans and unfortunately it doesn’t look like getting any better soon. They’re currently in 14th position and are just about out of finals contention.

It’s impossible to pick against North Melbourne with the recent form they’ve found, especially when their opposition is playing like one of the worst sides in the league. Don’t overthink this, take the Kangaroos to cover the spread.

GWS Giants vs Brisbane Lions (4:40pm AEST, Giants Stadium)

The Giants remain one of the most frustrating teams in the league to invest in. They looked a sure thing to beat the Bombers last weekend until they seemingly ran out of gas in the last quarter, eventually losing by six points thanks to a late Cale Hooker goal. Despite the bizarre loss, the Giants are still fourth on the ladder with their 9-5 record on the season.

The Lions continue to prove the doubters wrong with their consistent play this season. Last weekend they held off a determined Demons outfit at the GABBA to eventually win by a comfortable 33 points. Lachie Neale was back to his devastating best with 38 touches, while Dayne Zorko was best afield with an impressive 31 touches and three goals. Now at 9-5 for the season and sitting pretty in fifth spot, it’s time to take the young Lions serious, if you haven’t been already.

This looms as one of the most important fixtures of the round with its potential impact on the top four. Whoever wins this match will likely finish inside the top four, while the loser will fall a game and potentially percentage outside. Simply due to the home ground advantage, we’ll be siding with the Giants here.
