For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow voting system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can then form a 'range' for each player (i.e. a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.

Similar to previous years, Carlton were competitive in the season opener, but ultimately fell short against Richmond. The Tigers were well led by Trent Cotchin who had 31 disposals and six clearances to lift his side when they were challenged. Dustin Martin had 30 touches but wasn’t dominant, while Toby Nankervis had a strong game with 17 disposals, 34 hitouts and 3 goals. For the Blues, Patrick Cripps was in menacing form with 32 disposals and 6 tackles, while Sam Walsh impressed on debut with 24 disposals as a player of the future.

The Cats got the win in a tight, scrappy match, with Tim Kelly a standout with 31 disposals and 9 clearances. Patrick Dangerfield was good with 27 disposals and a goal, while Tom Stewart patrolled half-back with 26 disposals. Adam Treloar was prolific with 34 disposals, 6 tackles and a goal on a disappointing evening for the Pies.

Port Adelaide were impressive as they notched a big away win against the highly-fancied Demons. Tom Rockliff was back to his best with 44 disposals, 10 marks and 8 tackles for a massive 166 fantasy points! He was well supported by Travis Boak who had 34 disposals, 9 marks, 8 tackles and a goal, while Justin Westhoff was the spearhead in attack with 5 goals from 18 disposals and 9 marks. Christian Salem was best for the Dees with 32 disposals but hard to see him figuring in the votes.

Adelaide 7.13.55 def by Hawthorn 12.15.87
The Hawks continued their dominances of the Crows with a big away win to kick-start their season. They were without Tom Mitchell, but James Worpel (27 disposals, 2 goals) and Jaegar O’Meara (24 disposals, 2 goals) stepped up in the middle, while James Sicily seems set for a big year with 26 disposals and 10 marks. The Hawks won the game but the big stats were with the Crows mids with Rory Sloane (36 disposals, 9 tackles, 1 goal) and Matt Crouch (40 disposals, 1 goal) who were both enormous. Could be a tricky game for Brownlow votes.

The Bulldogs held on to defeat the Swans with plenty of contributions across the board. Marcus Bontempelli (29 disposals, 7 tackles, 1 goal), Jack Macrae (32 disposals) and Tom Liberatore (28 disposals) were all good while Aaron Naughton provided a target up forward with 3 goals from 15 disposals and 6 marks. For Sydney, Callum Sinclair was the dominant big man with 44 hitouts and 11 disposals, while Jake Lloyd racked up 35 disposals in defence.

After being 27 points down at quarter-time, the Lions ran rampant as they destroyed the reigning Premiers to win by 44. New recruit Lachie Neale was the leading ball winner with 29 disposals and a goal, while Jarryd Lyons (26 disposals, 7 tackles), Jarrod Berry (25 disposals) and Hugh McCluggage (20 disposals, 1 goal) were also effective. Up forward it was Lincoln McCarthy who finished with 4 goals from 11 touches. For the visitors, Dom Sheed played a lone hand with 38 disposals and a goal.

The Saints survived a scare to defeat the Suns by a point in a scrappy contest at Marvel Stadium. It might be another tough game to decide Brownlow votes with some even contributions. Seb Ross (27 disposals), Jack Billings (28 disposals), Jack Newnes (23 disposals) and Jack Steele (22 disposals, 10 tackles, 1 goal) are all a chance while Brayden Fiorini (30 disposals, 6 tackles) was the leading ball winner on the ground. Josh Bruce provided the target for the Saints with 18 touches, 6 marks and 3 goals.

The Giants smashed the Bombers with Stephen Coniglio on fire with 31 disposals, 7 tackles and 3 goals for 161 fantasy points in a clear best-on-ground performance. Tim Taranto was also superb with 30 disposals, 10 tackles and 2 goals, while Lachie Whitfield (30 disposals) and Jacob Hopper (28 disposals) also found plenty of the ball. Jeremy Cameron finished their work with 4 goals from 13 touches.

A horrible start for the Roos as Freo ran away with a thumping victory. There were plenty of great contributors with Cam McCarthy finishing the job with a career-best 5 goals from 20 disposals. Brad Hill was dynamic with 28 disposals, 7 tackles and a goal, while Nat Fyfe racked up 32 disposals and a goal. Darcy Tucker was impressive with 24 disposals, 7 tackles and 2 goals, while Michael Walters also hit the scoreboard with 3 goals from 19 touches. Jamie Macmillan was best for the Roos with 37 disposals.
