SHA TIN RACING TIPS
Best Bet: Race 4 Prince Of Gems
Next Best Bet: Race 7 Right Choice
Best Value: Race 8 Fantastic Fabio
RACE 2
Very short here, Voyage Warrior but looks the clear one to beat. He's won his past two trials by a combined 10.8L and lines up on debut over the 1000m straight track today. The barrier draw is a huge plus - the grandstand rail is always the best place to be in the 1000m races at Sha Tin and barrier 14 means he'll be there right from the jump. Should be winning.
RACE 3
Another Class 5 here, this time over the 1200m. I'll be backing Natural Flare and saving on Richcity Fortune. Natural Flare gets Purton on for the first time this season. He ran well for 3rd last start over 1400m. Expect him to go forward (it wouldn't surprise me if he led) from the inside barrier, where he might look to use his race fitness to his aid after racing over 1400m last start. Richcity Fortune won last start over track and distance carrying 50.5kg. Up 2.5kg in the weights today but will go forward and if he leads, could win again.
RACE 4
Prince Of Gems looks one of the better bets of the day. He sat outside the leader and kicked away from them in smart fashion on debut, before encountering a bit of trouble last start. The form out of both of those races has stacked up, with the horse he beat on debut since winning, and the horse that ran 2nd in his race last start winning last weekend. Drawn well in 3, I wouldn't be surprised to see him kick up and lead on the inside, which should see him very hard to run down. Star Luck could be hardest to beat on debut for Frankie Lor and Karis Teetan. Drawn wide but has trialled nicely. Happy to save on him at $5.50.
RACE 5
Going with Monica here for John Moore and Silvestre De Sousa. He ran well when second up from a little let-up last start and should be ready to peak third up here. He finished the race off in the fastest final sectional, so from the good draw and with SDS jumping on today, he should be hard to beat. He was a winner in this class and at this track and distance back in December. One at odds that could outrun his price is Super Hippogriff. He's on debut and ran 2nd in his latest trial behind Mr Croissant, who won recently and had some decent form behind him. At $21 he's not the worst bet.
Value: Super Hippogriff $21
RACE 6
Gone with Goko on top here, who has a good record at this track and distance, including a half-length defeat here last start. Carries a similar weight today and gets a jockey upgrade so there's no reason he can't go very close again today. Also keen to back Best Sense first up. Last time he raced he bled, and bleeders often return to the races very fit as they're put under pressure in training to ensure they don't bleed again. Purton is an eye-catching jockey booking and he'll be in the right part of the straight from barrier 14. Close to double figure odds looks a reasonable price.
RACE 7
Great little race. Right Choice makes the step up to Class 2 today after winning dominantly with top weight in Class 3 last start. He's won four of his five career starts and looks more than capable of handling the rise in class today. Drawn well and doesn't get in badly at the weights with just 53kg. Happy to take $2.35 but he'll need to be at his best in this field.
RACE 8
Honest Way has run 2nd to the undefeated Full Of Beauty in his past two starts, which is great form for a race like this. No Full Of Beauty to contend with today, so he looks hard to beat. Draws well and although rising slightly in the weights, he's still well enough handicapped to win today. Call me crazy but despite finishing last and being beaten 14L first up, I'm going to have something on Fantastic Fabio at $41. He never goes well first up but he has run well after similar defeats in the past. Expecting him to improve second up today and although he finds a tough race, he looks a blowout chance at the odds.
Value: Fantastic Fabio $41
RACE 9
Chung Wah Spirit dropped to Class 4 for the first time in his career last start and showed he's much better than that, bolting in by 3.8L. Purton was a huge jockey change for him last start and he sticks with him today as he rises back up to Class 3. He can win again with the good draw in his favour.
RACE 10
Racing Fighter is in terrific form having won over 1200m here three starts ago before finishing 2nd at his past two starts over 1400m here. One of those was behind Right Choice, who looks a huge chance in Race 7 and has won four of his five career starts, so that looks a very solid form line. The query today is barrier 13 on the C+3 course, which could play to frontrunners, but if he gets some luck and is close enough on the turn, he'll be hard to hold out. Cool Team looks the value at $8.00. He was only beaten 1.5L first up from a long spell and draws well. Can go close second up today.
