RACE 3
I often say the best form for a 2400m race is 2400m form and horses that go into 2400m races with a 2400m run under their belt at their previous start hold an advantage over those who don’t. The only horse in this field to have run over 2400m last start is Front View – in fact he’s had two 2400m runs leading into this. He hasn’t finished outside the top two in his past four starts, including a dominant win at Newcastle two starts back. Last start he came from last to get within a nose of the winner. James McDonald is a massive jockey booking for him today and although he’s only won one race in his 16-start career, I think he’s a huge chance today. Fluidity quite clearly looks the horse to beat.
RACE 5
Slightly concerned with the little drift on Common Purpose early here but I think he’s the horse to beat. This race looks a bit like a midweek Highway Handicap and he proved first up at Canterbury that he’s up to winning metro races outside of Highway Handicaps. He’s now won four of his past five starts and the one failure was when he was caught three-wide without cover at his final start last prep. Bowman sticks with him after riding him to victory first up and he’s got a great second up record so with even luck, he really should be in the finish today. The value in the race could be Our Rosemaree at $9.00. She won two Highway Handicaps in a row – both quite comfortably – and was desperately unlucky not to win again last start at Warwick Farm. She was held up the last 150m in a small field of five and there was actually an inquiry into the ride. Drawn wide today so should have no issue finding clear running and based on her recent form she should be competitive here. Good odds.
Value: Our Rosemaree $9.00
SANDOWN HILLSIDE RACING TIPS
RACE 5
Jungle Fish looks the one to beat here after a dominant first up win as the $1.16 favourite at Pakenham but there’s two at good odds that could be worth a bet. I’m interested in Senrima Tide who was the well-backed favourite at Moonee Valley last time out but failed. Her form prior to that was solid and Cincinnati Red has since run well again to somewhat frank the form. If you can forgive her for her performance at the Valley last start, she looks a good each way chance at $7.50. Rue de Rennes has continued to improve with racing and with the step up in distance since her 64-week break. She won dominantly at Mornington last start and although she drops in trip today, she could be competitive at the same price.
Value: Rue de Rennes $7.50
RACE 6
A bit of a throw at the stumps here with Dinner Lake, who comes into today third up from a spell. On paper, he hasn’t done a lot in his first two runs back from a spell, but if you look at his record, he rarely does. But it’s at this stage of his preparation when he tends to come good, and he wasn’t as bad last start as it might appear. In fact, he was pretty unlucky; he went to the line untested after being held up for a large part of the straight. He’s had three starts when third up from a spell and he’s won two of them, including a win at this track and distance last preparation. He carries 62kg today which isn’t an easy thing to do but at $16 he might just run better than his price suggests. East Indiaman has been gelded leading into his return and has been well-backed, as has Savvy Oak on his first run back from a spell.
RACE 7
La Tigeresa is very short now at $1.85 but she should be very hard to beat. She’s been very good in two starts back from a spell. First up she ran 2nd to the very promising Clarice Cliffs, beaten just a length with a further 3.5L back to the third horse. Clarice Cliffs then came out and won its next start by 6L, while La Tigeresa came out and won second up over 1200m at this track, so the form is stacking up nicely. She steps up to 1400m today and with even luck she is quite clearly the one they all have to beat. Craig Williams jumps on Peko today; she looks the danger.
RACE 8
Probably my best bet of the day here at the price. Villa Sarchi was breathtaking when sizzling home to win first up at this track and distance. She then went to Moonee Valley second up but didn’t have much go her way. She knuckled badly at the start and ended up last in the run, came five-wide around the turn and still managed to run quite clearly the best final 200m of the race and the third fastest final 200m of the meeting. She’s won third up previously and has won both her starts at this track and distance. If she jumps and gets even luck, I think she’ll be running right over the top of them late.
