2019 AFL Women's (AFLW) Round 2 Betting Tips

February 6th 2019, 5:01pm, By: matta91

It was an exciting start to the 2019 AFLW season and we're back for a look over the action in Round 2 kicking off Friday night! We take a look at all five games in Round 2 and give our betting tips below.

AFLW Round 2 Betting Tips

GWS Giants vs North Melbourne Kangaroos (Friday 8 February - 7:15pm)

Round 2 begins at Drummoyne Oval on Friday night footy as the Giants host the Kangaroos. Last week, GWS lost a close one against the Lions in Queensland and will be desperate to avoid a 0-2 start. Meanwhile, the Kangaroos started their AFLW campaign with a commanding 6 goal victory over the Blues. Questions over whether this new side would take time to gel are pretty much out the window as they looked like a genuine premiership threat already. As a result, they've been installed as heavy favourites in this matchup against the Giants, despite playing on the road. Their midfield and forward line are going to be a handful for the Giants and that should be the difference between the two sides. Last week, the Giants ranked last in the league for inside 50s and the Kangaroos midfield will probably pose a bigger threat compared to the Lions. The Kangaroos had the most shots on goal in Round 1 and could have easily won by more (7 goals, 10 behinds). So it's looking like the Kangaroos scoring potential will lead them to victory this Friday by over 7.5 points.

Collingwood Magpies vs Melbourne Demons (Saturday 9 February - 4:45pm)

Saturday's doubleheader will see traditional rivals go to battle at Victoria Park as the Pies host the Demons. Both sides lost by under a goal in Round 1 so the stakes will be high. Collingwood came into the season with a limited squad and they just couldn't hold off the Cats in Geelong as they lost by a point (24-23). While for Melbourne, their unbeaten record at Casey Fields was ended by the Dockers in a high scoring 59-55 defeat. So I think this could be a similar type of game where both sides are capable of winning. The Demons play an attacking style but that can expose their defence, where the Magpies need to capitalise. Looking back to last season as well, Collingwood comfortably beat the Demons by 34 points. Obviously, they have a different side in 2019 but playing at Victoria Park should see them play a close one in Round 2.

Western Bulldogs vs Geelong Cats (Saturday 9 February - 7:15pm)

On Saturday night, the Bulldogs return home for the first time in 2019 and will unveil their Premiership banner from 2018. They kicked off their title defence with a nail-biting 18-17 victory over the Crows in Adelaide. Katie Brennan kicked both goals for her side and should be the key in this matchup. Geelong made history in Round 1 as the Cats won their first AFLW game with a 1 point win over the Magpies. Nina Morrison dominated with 22 disposals, 8 tackles and a crucial behind. So with both of these sides coming off a 1 point victory, this should be a tight affair and that should see either team win by under 15.5 points.

Carlton Blues vs Adelaide Crows (Sunday 10 February - 4:05pm)

Both the Crows and Blues are looking for a victory after Round 1 and this Round 2 encounter will be a high stakes battle. Adelaide will count themselves unlucky after last week as they out-played the Bulldogs but came away with 0 premiership points. They were incredibly inaccurate in-front of goals, kicking 11 behinds and just 1 goal. However, a matchup against Carlton could kick start their forward line. The 2018 wooden spooners didn't show much improvement against the Kangaroos as they easily went down by 6 goals. Interestingly though, they were the 2nd best team in Round 1 for Inside 50s but lack the conversion rates to compete with the best sides at the moment. So I think this is a pretty hard game to predict as both sides could easily struggle to kick over 3 goals if last week is anything to go by.

Fremantle Dockers vs Brisbane Lions (Sunday 10 February - 6:05pm)

Round 2 concludes with a really interesting matchup between the Dockers and Lions in Perth. The Dockers stunned the Demons with a 4 point win in Round 1. They looked impressive in attack, kicking 9 goals and just holding on in the end for an important early-season victory. Brisbane also held on for victory in Round 1 as the beat the Giants by 2 points. Jess Wuetschner was the star as she kicked 3 of the Lions 4 goals. The travel factor may hurt the Lions here but this side is proving hard to back against in AFLW history. So in a close contest between two in-form sides, this is looking like an either way kind of game which is reflected in the odds. Brisbane is just favourited at $1.80 but really, that kind of means this will be a tight margin. The Lions defence is one of the best in the league and that should help stop the Dockers forward line. They also met in Round 4 last year and both sides totalled just 37 points in a 7 point Brisbane victory. Hopefully, we see the same kind of result in this one.
