It could be a big day for trainer Darren Weir at Caulfield, with strong chances in several races, including the Caulfield Cup.
In Race 5 he has the short-priced (and well-backed) favourite Verry Elleegant, who caught the eye running into 3rd on her Australian debut behind stablemate Amphitrite. Amphitrite came out and won the G1 Thousand Guineas last weekend, keeping her unbeaten streak this prep intact. Therefore, the form looks particularly strong and the step up to 2000m should see Verry Elleegant very hard to beat.
Following her, Weir will once again saddle up the favourite for Race 6 in the form of Extra Brut. He’s won three of his four career start and was listed as Weir’s best winning chance of the day. Drawn well in barrier 3 today, he’ll be hard to hold out.
We end the day at Caulfield with the G3 Moonga Stakes and we’ll be leaning on Peaceful State or Mr Sneaky to get us across the line. We’ll be backing both but we’ll be leaning towards Peaceful State ahead of Mr Sneaky. Peaceful State was huge first up in a strong form race and then had no luck in the Rupert Clarke Stakes last start. Mr Sneaky also comes out of the Rupert Clarke Stakes, where he hit the line strongly, recording some of the best final sectionals of the race. That race has already thrown up a Group 1 winner in the form of Land Of Plenty and Osbourne Bulls also franked the form with a strong showing in The Everest.
Over at Royal Randwick in Sydney, we’re likely to be racing on a pretty wet track. To add a bit of value to our tournament selections we’ve gone with an $8.00 chance in Race 5 with Abdon. He’s had three starts in Australia now and put the writing on the wall with a strong run from back in the field behind Zourkhan last start. That was on a Heavy track and a repeat of that performance would see him competitive here.
In Race 7 at Randwick we see talented mare Pecans return to the track. She’s got a terrific first up record with five top-two finishes from six starts and has also been successful on wet ground in the past. She’s a $5.00 chance with Pointsbet. Another in the race at a bit of value is Resin at $8.00. She’s undefeated at the distance and comes off a huge win at Rosehill on wet ground last start so from the good draw it’d be no surprise to see her win again.
To round out the day in Sydney, Mahalangur can progress forward with another win after returning to the track with a comfortable victory first up in midweek company. He’s bred to handle the wet and gets in light with just 53kg today. He’s a talented horse with better wins in store so expect to see a good showing here.
