World Cup Final - Argentina vs Germany
Monday 5:00am AEST
A thrilling 2014 World Cup has come down to Germany and Argentina to battle it out for football’s biggest trophy – the honour of World Champions. It’s been an exciting tournament with plenty of high scoring and several upsets. While many predicted host city Brazil would reach the final, Germany have been a powerhouse for the entire tournament and their 7-1 thumping of Brazil in the semi-final was an emphatic statement that the Germans are the real deal. However they will have to make history if they are to win as no European nation has triumphed in the World Cup on South American soil.
Germany crushed Portugal 4-0, drew with Ghana and then edged out USA 1-0 to top Group G. They needed extra-time to see off Algeria 2-1, overcame France 1-0 and then annihilated Brazil to reach the final.
South American support will be with Argentina who topped their group by defeating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-1, Iran 1-0 and Nigeria 3-2. However the knockout stages have been a struggle, sneaking Switzerland 1-0 in extra time, defeating Belgium 1-0 and then getting home with penalties against The Netherlands after a nil-all draw.
The market favours Germany ($2.20) to win in regular time with the Draw ($3.30) and Argentina ($3.40) perhaps offering some value. Germany’s edge has been exaggerated by their semi-final domination, however this was as much Brazil’s poor form as it was Germany’s brilliance. Argentina should not be overlooked as this final should go down to the wire.
