Once again Before You Bet is back with our rolling Brownlow Medal Tracker for the 2018 season. We’ll be providing comments for every game of the season, along with our vote predictions to help with your projections for the 2018 AFL season.
Our Brownlow predictions are one of the most popular aspects of the site with punters able to scoop huge profits using the information found in these pages. You’ll be able to stay up to date with our current Top 20 2018 Brownlow Medal leaderboard, while there will be links to every single round-by-round voting posted there.
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can form a 'range' for each player (ie a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.

Despite resting a number of key players, the Tigers were able to do enough to secure the minor premiership with a narrow win against the Bombers. Dusty Martin was at his best with 26 disposals, 10 marks and 4 goals in a best-on-ground display. Josh Caddy also picked up 4 goals from his 17 possessions, while Alex Rance was a rock in defence with 17 disposals. Devon Smith was dynamic for Essendon with 28 disposals, 5 tackles and a goal, while David Zaharakis was the meatch leading ball winner with 30 touches.

The Power are on the verge of missing the finals as the Pies broke away late to record a big win. Brodie Grundy was a clear best-on-ground with 42 hitouts, 25 disposals, 9 tackles, 8 clearances and a goal in a mammoth effort. Taylor Adams had 30 touches, 7 tackles and a goal, while Steele Sidebottom racked up 33 disposals and a goal. Steven Motlop picked up 28 touches for Port, while Travis Boak (27 disposals, 2 goals) and Justin Westhoff (22 disposals, 9 hitouts, 10 tackles, 1 goal) also tried hard.

Geelong kicked the last 23 goals of the game to record a thumping win over the hapless Dockers. Tom Hawkins kicked 6 majors to go with 22 disposals and 7 marks, while Brandan Parfitt finished with 4 goals from his 17 touches. Tim Kelly was a class above with 26 disposals and 3 goals, while Sam Menegola picked up 27 disposals and a goal. Not much to say about the Dockers, but Nat Fyfe returned to the side and picked up 37 disposals in a solo effort.

After Phil Davis was injured, it was the Buddy show as Lance Franklin took hold of the game, kicking 5 goals from 16 touches and 8 marks to win the medal for best on ground. Luke Parker was brilliant with 33 disposals and 2 goals, while Jake Lloyd (30 disposals, 9 marks) and Josh Kennedy (27 disposals) were also good contributors. Dylan Shiel (33 disposals, 1 goal) and Tim Taranto (30 disposals, 8 marks) were best for the Giants.

Gold Coast 11.8.74 def by Brisbane 10.18.78
A fiery Q-Clash saw Brisbane hang on for the win against the Gold Coast. Dayne Beams was superb with 38 disposals, 8 marks and a goal to win the medal for best on ground. Hugh McCluggage (22 disposals, 1 goal) and Allen Christensen (22 disposals, 10 marks, 1 goal) were also good. Alex Sexton continued to hit the scoreboard with 4 goals from his 19 touches, while Brayden Fiorini was the leading ball winner for the Suns with 32 disposals and a goal.

St.Kilda 11.10.76 def by Hawthorn 12.8.80
The Saints gave a scare but the Hawks held on for the win with Jack Gunston one of the best with 24 disposals and 4 goals. Jaegar O’Meara picked up 27 touches, Shaun Burgoyne had 24 disposals and a goal while big Ben McEvoy returned to the side with 32 hitouts, 11 touches and 2 goals. Tom Mitchell was well held, despite still picking up 33 possessions, as Jack Steele was one of the best for the Saints as he collected 29 disposals of his own, as well as a goal. Seb Ross racked up 34 disposals and Jack Lonie was lively with 4 goals from 18 touches.

An uninspiring clash saw the Dogs get the points and consign the Blues to the bottom of the table. Josh Dunkley continued his purple patch with 36 disposals, 7 marks and 6 tackles, while Marcus Bontempelli (37 disposals), Jack Macrae (33 disposals) and Lachie Hunter (33 disposals, 1 goal) were all in the thick of the action. Kade Simpson was best for the Blues with 35 disposals and a goal.

The Demons have secured their first finals appearance in 12 years with a big away win against the Eagles. Max Gawn was immense with 41 hitouts and 20 disposals, feeding the on ball brigade of Angus Brayshaw (26 disposals, 10 tackles, 1 goal), James Harmes (28 disposals, 7 tackles, 1 goal) and Nathan Jones (27 disposals, 1 goal). Jake Melksham finished off their work with 4 goals from 18 disposals and 10 marks. Dom Sheed (31 disposals, 1 goal) got plenty of the ball and was well supported by Elliot Yeo who had 23 disposals, 10 tackles and a goal.

It’s curtains for the season for both of these teams with Adelaide holding on against a fast-finishing Roos. Once again the Roos let the opposition midfield run wild as Matt Crouch picked up 46 disposals including an AFL record 35 handballs. Rory Laird (41 disposals, 9 marks), Rory Sloane (29 disposals), Bryce Gibbs (27 disposals, 1 goal) and Rory Atkins (27 disposals) all won plenty of the ball. Trent Dumont was best for the Roos with 33 disposals, while Jarred Waite presented well with 15 disposals, 10 marks and 3 goals.
