Our best bet of the 2018 PGA Championship Jason Day got off to a hot start on the weekend but ultimately couldn’t salute for the top ten finish, finishing 19th as Brooks Koepka took out his second major of the year.
No rest for the weary, however, as the tour rolls on this weekend with the 2018 Wyndham Championship set to kick off Thursday night from the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Wyndham Championship will be the final PGA Tour event where players can earn all important FedEx Cup points before the massive four week series of FedEx Cup Finals get underway next weekend to decide the Champion. We preview the event in full and give our betting tips below.
2018 Wyndham Championship Betting Tips
The Course
Sedgefield Country Club is a 7,171 yard par 70, which means it is on the shorter sides of PGA courses in 2018. It will be a nice change after the world’s best have competed on a couple of lengthy courses over the past two weeks in the WGC Bridgestone and the PGA Championship.
Sedgefield has been a regular host of the Wyndham Championship since it’s first edition all the way back in 1938 and has hosted every tournament since 2008. The signature of Sedgefield is undoubtedly it’s small, wavy greens, that can be tough to hit accurately and even tougher to navigate with the putter.
Players that hit high green in regulation and are solid with the putter should reign supreme this weekend in one of the only events on tour where driving distance isn’t a massive factor.
The Field
Henrik Stenson will be back to defend his 2017 Wyndham Championship title, after a first round course record of 62 set up a fantastic one stroke win over youngster Ollie Schniederjans. Stenson was a little disappointing last weekend in the PGA Championship on a course that should have really suited his play style, so we’ll be steering clear of him this weekend.
Other big names that will be competing this weekend include Adam Scott, who finished third in the PGA Championship on the weekend, Sergio Garcia, Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama and Jason Dufner. All in all it is a pretty weak field as players recover from four big weekend’s in a row and look to prepare for the big month of FedEx playoffs ahead.
Picks
Form will obviously play a lot into this weekend but one of the major factors leading into the Wyndham is clearly the last opportunity to secure valuable FedEx Cup points before the playoffs start next week. When looking through the current FedEx cup standings and who currently sits outside the all important top 125, one name stands out like a sore thumb, Sergio Garcia.
Since it’s inception in 2008, Garcia has never failed to make the FedEx Cup playoffs, and currently sits in 131st place on the FedEx cup standings, 33 points behind the 125th ranked golfer Tyrone Van Aswegen. Considering the amount of golfers who are already in the top 125 and playing in this event, it’s possible that Garcia will need a top 10 finish to propel himself into the FedEx Cup finals at Wyndham. Finishing in first place at PGA Tour earns players a whopping 500 points while 10th racks up just 75 points.
While Garcia is famous for lacking big trophies in his case, it’s his consistency over a ridiculous amount of time that has earnt him as much respect as he currently receives. He has finished in the top 25 of the final FedEx Cup standings six out of the 11 times it has been held so far and you can bet he won’t be interested in missing the finals here.
There’s also the looming Ryder Cup selections which will make Garcia desperate to impress at the Wyndham this weekend. It’s a lot of pressure to face, but if there’s any man in the field this weekend capable of pulling out a clutch performance it’s Sergio.
