Once again Before You Bet is back with our rolling Brownlow Medal Tracker for the 2018 season. We’ll be providing comments for every game of the season, along with our vote predictions to help with your projections for the 2018 AFL season.
Our Brownlow predictions are one of the most popular aspects of the site with punters able to scoop huge profits using the information found in these pages. You’ll be able to stay up to date with our current Top 20 2018 Brownlow Medal leaderboard, while there will be links to every single round-by-round voting posted there.
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can form a 'range' for each player (ie a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.

It was a good week for the Crows with Rory Sloane signing for another five years, and the team securing a much-needed win over the Cats. Sloane was excellent with 27 touches, 7 tackles and a goal, while Rory Laird racked up 43 possessions. Rory Atkins collected 28 disposals and a goal, while Tom Lynch finished off their work with 4 goals from 22 touches. Patrick Dangerfield was immense for the Cats with 33 disposals, 10 tackles and 3 goals in his best game of the year.

St.Kilda 16.20.116 def Carlton 7.10.52
St.Kilda got the win in an uninspiring Friday night contest with Jack Steven leading the way with 33 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals. Jack Billings was flashy with 30 disposals, 7 marks and 2 goals while Rowan Marshall provided a glimpse to the future with 23 hitouts, 16 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals in an impressive performance. Patrick Cripps must be getting sore shoulders from carrying the load of the Blues as he once again was a star with 35 disposals, 7 marks and a goal, and should be figuring in the votes in a losing effort.

Hawthorn 9.11.65 def by Brisbane 15.8.98
Brisbane upset the finals chances of Hawthorn with a big win in Launceston. Dayne Beams was again superb with 33 touches, while Hugh McCluggage had a career-best 29 disposals. Stefan Martin was a dominant big man with 33 hitouts and 17 disposals, while youngster Cameron Rayner continues to improve with 3 goals and 19 possessions. For the Hawks, Tom Mitchell was relentless as usual, with 43 touches (29 in the first half), 7 tackles and a goal, while Jaegar O’Meara was excellent with 27 disposals and 4 goals.

Melbourne 18.11.119 def Western Bulldogs 10.9.69
The Dogs were competitive for a half but the Dees ran away with it in the second half to record a strong victory. Clayton Oliver (34 disposals, 6 tackles, 1 goal) and Angus Brayshaw (38 disposals, 6 marks) won plenty of the ball as they were fed by big Max Gawn who was dominant in the ruck with 41 hitouts and 17 disposals. Jesse Hogan finished the job with 4 goals from his 18 disposals. For the Dogs, Jack Macrae was good in his return with 33 disposals, 7 marks and 8 tackles but that may not be enough to get in the votes.

The Suns led at half time, but the Bombers got motoring to come away with a comfortable victory. Zach Merrett (37 disposals, 7 tackles) and Dyson Heppell (36 disposals, 5 tackles) enjoyed running around with no attention, while Devon Smith brought the intensity with 23 disposals, 9 tackles and a goal. Michael Hurley (24 disposals, 10 marks) and Cale Hooker (19 disposals, 9 marks) were impenetrable across half-back.

GWS kept their finals hopes alive with a win against the table leaders in a classic contest. Lachie Whitfield was dominant across half-back with 35 disposals, 12 marks and 6 tackles, and he was well supported by Stephen Coniglio (30 disposals, 1 goal) and Callan Ward (32 disposals). Tim Taranto was also a good contributor with 23 disposals, 7 marks and 2 goals. Dustin Martin was good for the Tigers with 29 disposals and a goal.

The Eagles saw their premiership changes climb as they defeated the Pies on the hallowed turf of the MCG. They had winners all over the ground with Jack Redden (30 disposals, 8 marks, 7 tackles), Andrew Gaff (30 disposals) and Luke Shuey (30 disposals, 6 tackles) all outstanding in the middle of the ground, while Shannon Hurn (25 disposals, 11 marks) and Jeremy McGovern (22 disposals, 12 marks) built a fortress at half-back.

It was close all day but the Swans were in front at the right time with a narrow win over the Roos. Buddy Franklin was the match winner in the last quarter on the way to 3 goals from 19 possessions, while Ben Ronke also hit the scoreboard with 5 goals from his 16 touches. Isaac Heeney (28 disposals, 2 goals) and Jake Lloyd (30 disposals) were the Swans ball winners. North Melbourne also had some heavy scorers with Jack Ziebell (22 disposals, 9 maks, 5 goals) and Ben Brown (17 disposals, 8 marks, 4 goals) amongst their best while Shaun Higgins racked up 33 touches.

A tough round for tipsters was capped off with Freo upsetting the Power. In the absence of superstar Nat Fyfe, it was Lachie Neale (33 disposals), David Mundy (29 disposals, 1 goal), Ed Langdon (28 disposals) and Luke Ryan (28 disposals) who setup the victory. Ollie Wines (30 disposals, 7 tackles) and Chad Wingard (24 disposals, 2 goals) tried hard for the visitors but it wasn’t enough to get the Power over the line.
