One again Before You Bet is back with our rolling Brownlow Medal Tracker for the 2018 season. We’ll be providing comments for every game of the season, along with our vote predictions to help with your projections for the 2018 AFL season.
Our Brownlow predictions are one of the most popular aspects of the site with punters able to scoop huge profits using the information found in these pages. You’ll be able to stay up to date with our current Top 20 2018 Brownlow Medal leaderboard, while there will be links to every single round-by-round voting posted there.
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can form a 'range' for each player (ie a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.
If you intend on using our Brownlow votes to bet why not consider one of the best Australian sports betting sites which offer some great incentives for new customers. Sydney 10.12.72 def West Coast 7.15.57
Sydney inflicted West Coast’s second defeat of the season in a game where it was a little tricky to find a standout from the winning team. Elliot Yeo was arguably best on ground in a losing effort with his 29 disposals, 8 tackles and two goals attempting to will the Eagles against the tide of the Swans. For the victors, Josh Kennedy was good with 28 disposals and a goal, Oliver Florent continues to flourish with 29 disposals, and Isaac Heeney was typically classy with 22 disposals and 8 tackles. The half-back line of Heath Grundy (23 disposals, 7 marks) and Nick Smith (20 disposals, 6 marks) were also influential.
Elliot Yeo - 3
Josh Kennedy - 1
Oliver Florent – 1
Heath Grundy - 1
Carlton 6.10.46 def by Fremantle 15.13.103
Carlton were pathetic in the first half, going goal-less, before adding some respectability to the score line in the second half. After a week off through suspension, Nat Fyfe was brilliant with 30 disposals, 8 marks and 2 goals, and will no doubt pick up votes to extend his lead at the top of the Brownlow leaderboard. The battle for the three votes will be against Lachie Neale who was also outstanding with 33 disposals and 3 goals. Connor Blakely (27 disposals) and David Mundy (20 disposals, 1 goal) were also good. Kade Simpson (32 disposals, 7 marks) and Patrick Cripps (38 disposals, 7 marks) were best for the Blues.
Nat Fyfe – 2.5
Lachie Neale – 2.5
Patrick Cripps - 1
Gold Coast 11.12.78 def by St.Kilda 11.14.80
The Gold Coast blew it. Leading by 31 points at the final break, the Suns somehow capitulated and let the Saints run over the top of them in an absolute nightmare. Jack Steven (28 disposals including 12 clearances) and Seb Ross (33 disposals, 10 marks, 7 tackles) got plenty of the ball, while Jade Gresham was the hero with the winning goal in the final minute to go with 23 disposals and 2 goals. Jack Billings also returned to the side in better form than he left it, picking up 27 possessions.
Jack Steven – 2.5
Seb Ross – 2.5
Jack Billings – 0.5
Jade Gresham – 0.5
Hawthorn 12.16.88 def Adelaide 4.8.32
The injury-plagued Crows continue to struggle as the Hawks landed an easy win. James Sicily may not be a favourite of the umpires, but he should still pick up three votes for 24 disposals, 8 marks and 3 crucial goals. Tom Mitchell was a ball magnet as usual with 40 disposals, while Jaegar O’Meara was great in close with 30 disposals, including 9 clearances, and 8 tackles. Jack Gunston (27 disposals, 1 goal) and Shaun Burgoyne (24 disposals, 1 goal) were also good. Bryce Gibbs (28 disposals) and Matt Crouch (30 disposals) were best for the Crows
