Best Bet: Race 1 #10 Trilli
Best Value: Race 8 #1 Distant Sky / #8 That Said
RACE 1
Interesting little two-year-old race to kick things off here because (10) Trilli is a horse I’ve been waiting a long time for to debut. Jason Warren is on record as saying this is the best two-year-old he’s ever trained. That was back in October last year leading into the Spring when the horse won a trial very nicely, but unfortunately the horse had a setback and its debut has been delayed until now. We’ve got no recent public trials to go off but given its been $5.50 into $3 since markets opened, there’s a fair chance it’s going well enough to win this! The favourite is currently (8) Propelle who has also been well supported, $4.60 into $2.80. This horse came from near last to finish within a length of the winner on debut at Sandown. Barrier 1 today means she should be closer and Damian Lane keeps the ride. If Trilli underperforms, surely Propelle wins. Sticking with Trilli based on the fact I’ve been waiting six months for her debut.
TIP: (10) Trilli
RACE 2
Following a couple out of the same 1000m race at Sandown last start. (3) Cherief’s Choice goes on top with three placings from four starts this prep. Today is D-day. Last start she was beaten a nose by Egyptian Bullet after settling outside the lead. Egyptian Bullet then came out and won its next start at Flemington in Saturday grade, which was its third win in a row, so the form seems reasonable. Barrier 1 today for Cherief’s Choice and just needs to repeat that effort from last start to win this. $2.80 short enough for a horse that’s won one from 10 starts. (7) Zapoya comes out of that same race, where she was trapped four-wide without cover in the back half of the field. She was also trapped three-wide without cover last start when beaten a nose at Pakenham. Surely she gets a better run from barrier 3 and if she doesn’t, Nathan Punch’s chances on her may be very limited! There’s $10 available which seems well over the odds.
TIP: (3) Cherief’s Choice / (7) Zapoya EW
RACE 3
Competitive race. (3) Call It A Day will be hard to beat here but I can’t tip it confidently as favourite as it’s first up over a distance it’s never run over (1000m) fresh from a year off the track. The trial couldn’t have been more impressive but the query still remains over how tuned up it is for today. My main bet in the race will be (4) Parwan Prince each way at $7.50. He ran 2nd first up over 1000m on a heavy track at Ballarat. Has good second up stats with two wins and a placing from four starts and has never missed a placing at the distance. Looks a good each way chance. (7) Flash Cash won first up at Pakenham and although this is harder, he rates a good chance. He’s finished in the top two in seven of his 10 career starts. (11) Sallybrook didn’t get much luck first up and at $15 is a value chance with barrier 1 and Stephen Baster taking over.
TIP: (4) Parwan Prince EW
RACE 4
Pretty low staying race. (6) Moss ‘N’ Bolt goes on top. Has been knocking on the door this prep with a narrow defeat two starts ago followed by a 3rd placing at Warrnambool last start, albeit beaten 5L on the wet ground. Draws well and gets his chance today. Also keen to have something on (5) Flaaj at $8. This stable always pops up with a winner at decent odds and they’ve got a few good chances throughout the day. This horse has had two starts back from a spell now – last start he was caught three-wide without cover on speed the entire race. Third up now and won third up last prep in this grade. (7) Geodesic bolted in at this track and distance last start but struggles to put two together. (1) Northern Journey should be nearing peak fitness now and his last run at Sandown was good.
TIP: (6) Moss ‘N’ Bolt / (5) Flaaj EW
RACE 5
Competitive little race. Just one bet for me and that will be (11) Tennessee Sky each way at $13. This horse went close in a maiden first up last prep before breaking through second up. She went off the boil in much harder races but she’s been spelled and returns here. She might be able to bounce back fresh today and looks a nice enough each way chance. (1) Weekend Escape gets a drop in grade and gets Damian Lane on board. Goes close today. (9) Gala Moshea gets blinkers back on and would give this a real shake on best form. The shades might do the trick.
TIP: (11) Tennessee Sky EW
RACE 6
Two at each way odds I’ll be backing here. (11) Toosbuy is first up here and Ben Melham is a notable jockey booking. He ran 2nd to a smart horse first up last prep and then bolted in second up. He then went to town and was well beaten in two starts. Has a couple of things to overcome today, namely the wide draw and the fact he’s only ever won on his home track at Mornington, but if he can return to that form from early last preparation then he’ll go close at $7.50. (12) Bonfire Gold has only had two career starts for a win and a 2nd placing. This is an astute little stable and the booking of Craig Williams does catch the eye. You could argue that he should be undefeated given he was unlucky when he ran 2nd on debut, so first up today I’m expecting a good run at $8.50. (5) Believing not hopless.
TIP: (11) Toosbuy / (12) Bonfire Gold
RACE 7
(7) Kaching doesn’t like getting his head in front often but he has absolutely no excuses here today. His form earlier in the prep around the likes of Peaceful State and Abyssinian is good and he’s continued to be right around the mark since then, with three consecutive placings. Lane keeps the ride on him today from barrier 3 and he will look the winner at some stage – hopefully his head is in front on the line. (2) Lucky Paddy was good first up without any luck, and normally this horse isn’t effective fresh. He was held up until the 100m mark and found the line nicely once clear, so with that run under the belt he looks a reasonable chance at $9 here. (9) Roseberry Street will be better off with the first up run under his belt and she’s already a winner at this track and distance. (12) Ali Orphan has won three of its past four and can’t be ruled out, while there’s two horses making their Australian debuts – (4) Al Galayel and (5) Meteor Light.
TIP: (7) Kaching / (2) Lucky Paddy EW
RACE 8
Tough way to finish off the card. (1) Distant Sky looks over the odds at $14. He was luckless last start when held up for the final 150m and he ran 3rd to Furrion before that. His other two starts this prep were both wins, so he’s certainly going well. (8) That Said was good under a huge weight first up, beaten only 0.6L. Bolted in second up last prep and drops 3kg in weight today so the $11 appeals. (12) Onemore Emotion put the writing on the wall with a big run last start, (13) Dandre was held up at a crucial stage last start, while (15) Boss Striker gets blinkers back on. The chances don’t end there, either! Small each way bet on Distant Sky and That Said.
TIP: (1) Distant Sky EW / (8) That Said EW
