CAULFIELD RACING TIPS
RACE 1
Not often keen to bet into these two-year-old races but I’d be hesitant to take $2.70 about the favourite (1) Rock Hard with this stable/jockey combination, so I’ve gone searching for a couple to get him beat. I’ll be backing the Lindsay Park debutant (6) That Song who had a very quiet trial at Werribee leading into this. He’s bred to handle the wet conditions and you always have to respect a Hayes runner on debut in a juvenile race so $4.80 appeals. Also backing (4) Celestial King who is a $7 chance for Grahame Begg. He won a Cranbourne trial relatively nicely and this stable has been going particularly well in recent months so with $7 available it’s worth having something on.
TIP: (6) That Song / (4) Celestial King EW
RACE 2
The favourite (6) Run Gypsy Run looks short enough at $4 here given she’s had three duck-eggs in her last three races and resumes from a 210-day spell today. There’s plenty of questions about her so she’s well and truly worth taking on in my opinion. (11) Monkey Magic goes on top at $6. This horse’s form has been good all prep. Went close first up from a long spell at Pakenham behind some genuine Saturday city-class horses, followed that with an easy win at Cranbourne and was very stiff last start when beaten 0.4L after sitting three-wide the trip. I really don’t think there’s a great deal to beat here and down on the minimum weight should give a great sight at a decent price. Also keen to have something small on (4) Selenia at $11. She’s done very little in her first two runs back this prep, but she rarely does. She’s had 10 first and second up runs for zero placings. But she’s had three starts when third up, for two wins and a placing. All her stats at this track and this distance are terrible but she might just be ready to break that curse today. Drawn well with an underrated jockey on board.
TIP: (11) Monkey Magic / (4) Selenia EW
RACE 3
Tipping the youngest horse in the field to beat the older horses here. (9) My Paisann is knocking on the door for a win after running 2nd at his past two starts. Barrier 3 is a better draw than barrier 1 last start, where he was beaten just 0.4L at this track and distance. Has won on soft ground before and looks a live chance at $5. Also going to have a penny on (6) Bel Burgess at $31. He was sound first up but poor last start. He gets the blinkers back on today, draws well, has a good record at the distance and could run a sneaky race. I’m very wary of (5) Kenjorwood who was likely set for the ‘Bool last start. I’m always cautious with Weir runners coming off a last-start at the ‘Bool carnival.
TIP: (9) My Paisann / (6) Bel Burgess EW
RACE 4
Competitive little race this one. (5) Platinum Angel goes on top. She won nicely two starts ago at Sandown before going close in Adelaide last start when run down late by stablemate Peaceful State, who is no hack. Drawn wide here which is an obvious concern but happy to stick with her at $3.30. Also going to forgive (8) Moet Rose for a poor showing last start when the saddle slipped at the start of the race. Prior to that her form was well and truly good enough to be competitive in a race like this, with a 3rd placing behind William Thomas and Reilmartini standing out. She’s performed well at both starts on soft ground and could bounce back at $21.
TIP: (5) Platinum Angel / (8) Moet Rose EW
RACE 6
Another competitive affair. I was fairly impressed by the return of (3) Sun Quan when running 2nd to William Thomas first up at this track and distance. I think that’s a very good form line and this horse did win three on end last preparation, including one on a soft 7 track. Drawn well in barrier 5 and has Melbourne’s in-form jockey on board in Daniel Moor. Happy to take $4.35. (6) Raspberry Rose is an $11 chance but I think she’s capable of making the step up in grade here after wins in easier company in her past two starts. Her only start on soft ground was a 4L+ win on debut so she’ll handle it without a problem. Draws barrier 1 with 52kg on her back so she should be right up on speed.
TIP: (3) Sun Quan / (6) Raspberry Rose EW
RACE 7
Very good race with a few promising types engaged. I’ve got a soft spot for (3) Wise Hero and I can’t let him go around at $5 here without backing him. He’s first up here and although 1400m is likely his best distance, he showed last prep that he can be competitive over the shorter sprint trips. Gets weight relief with Steph Thornton taking the ride, draws well, handles the wet and should be hard to hold out late. With the expected slow track, it could be worth having something on (6) Urban Ruler at $9. This horse has won three of his four starts when first up from a spell and three of his four starts on soft ground. Trialled quietly leading into today, the jockey booking doesn’t fill me with confidence but we’re getting a decent enough price to swallow that.
TIP: (3) Wise Hero / (6) Urban Ruler EW
RACE 8
As mentioned in an earlier race preview, I’m typically very cautious backing Weir horses coming off victories during the Warrnambool carnival, but (2) Furrion is an exception because he’s won all three career starts in dominant fashion and really does look a very good horse. He bolted in at the ‘Bool on a soft track so conditions today will pose no problems and he’s already been truckloaded into $1.80. Looks a good multi anchor.
TIP: (2) Furrion
SCONE RACING TIPS
RACE 1
Normally not keen to get too involved in these sorts of Sydney staying races, which can be somewhat of a rotating lottery, but (4) Mazaz doesn’t appear to have too much to beat in this field. The step up to 2200m is sure to suit him and he’s drawn for a soft run from barrier 5. He has every right to be in the finish here at $3.70.
TIP: (4) Mazaz
RACE 2
It was a cakewalk for (2) Cradle Mountain first up at Rosehill at Randwick and despite dropping back from 1200m to 1100m here, he looks incredibly hard to beat. He has to carry weight today but he looks a horse destined for better races than this. Nothing exciting about the $1.70 but he could be one to throw in a multi with Furrion at Caulfield.
TIP: (2) Cradle Mountain
RACE 3
Competitive little fillies race with no real standouts. I was fairly impressed by the debut win of (6) Lady Shallot at Muswellbrook, where she backed up some nice trials to win comfortably by a widening 2L. Drawn softly in barrier 4 and Jason Collett takes over today which is a big plus. Just thought $7.50 in an open race wasn’t the worst play on an each way basis.
TIP: (6) Lady Shallot EW
RACE 4
She’s well and truly short enough at $3 but there’s no reason (8) Moss Trip can’t back up her last-start win and do it again today. She was only beaten 1.5L by Shoals in the Group 1 Surround Stakes two starts ago, which is form that has obviously proved to be exceptionally strong. She followed that with a win in Group 3 company over 1400m at Randwick last start. She’ll need to produce a similar effort today from the wide barrier, but at least she’ll be allowed an uninterrupted run down the outside. There’s not great depth to the form of her opposition here so she looks hard to beat once again.
TIP: (8) Moss Trip
