Super Rugby Round 10 Betting Tips
Blues vs Highlanders (Friday, Apr 20 5:35pm AEST)
Round 10 Super Rugby action starts in Auckland as the Blues host the Highlanders. For the home side, they’re coming off a 24-10 win over the Sunwolves, which snapped a 3 game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Highlanders thrashed the Brumbies at home 43-17 and they broke a 2 game losing streak. They’re 3-0 against the Blues and beat them 41-34 in the earlier matchup this season. The difference between the two sides should be defence again. The Highlanders allow just 23.2 points, which ranks them as the 3rd best defensive side in Super Rugby. The Blues are at the other end of the table as they’ve allowed 33 points per game. The bookies are with the Highlanders and I’ll back them to win by 8 points or more.
TIP: Highlanders -7.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
Waratahs vs Lions (Friday, Apr 20 7:45pm AEST)
The Friday night action concludes in Sydney as the Waratahs host the Lions at SFS. The Lions have never beaten the Waratahs in Australia so they’ll be underdogs in this contest. NSW is coming off 4 straight wins and will look to hurt the Lions’ shaky defence. The Lions give up 31 points per game and the Waratahs are ranked 2nd in Super Rugby for points scored (35ppg). But probably the more pleasing sign is the Waratahs are allowing just 25 points per game. So they should be confident of containing the Lions respectable attack. In the end, NSW are 5-1 as a favourite this season and have beaten the line in 6 of 7 matches. They’ve also beaten the Lions by 13+ in the last 3 meetings in Australia. So I’m backing them to beat the line on Friday.
TIP: Waratahs -1.5 - $1.97 at Sportsbet
Crusaders vs Sunwolves (Saturday, Apr 21 5:35pm AEST)
The main talking point in this contest is whether the Crusaders can beat the 37.5 point line as the Sunwolves are a terrible away team. They’ve never won a Super Rugby match outside of Japan, which now sits at 0-17. They also lost 50-3 in the one and only meeting between the sides, which occurred in 2017. They easily rank last in Super Rugby for points allowed (42) so it’s not looking good in this one. The New Zealand side has won 3 straight matches and they’ll be extra benefited from the bye last week. They thrashed the Jaguares 40-14 in their last win and I can see a similar result in this contest. So I’m taking the Crusaders to beat this massive line on Saturday.
TIP: Crusaders -37.5 - $1.90 at Sportsbet
Reds vs Chiefs (Saturday, Apr 21 7:45pm AEST)
Saturday night Rugby in Australia sees the Reds up against the Chiefs. After a good start to the season, the Reds have been poor in their 3 match losing streak. They’ve been easily handled by the Waratahs and Brumbies in the last 2 weeks. So it doesn’t bode well against the Chiefs. The Chiefs are massive favourites in this clash even though they come off a 25-13 loss against the Highlanders. The main reason why they’re favourites is an impressive record over the Reds. In the last 3 meetings, the Chiefs have outscored them 120-25. Which includes a 50-5 victory in the last matchup at Suncorp. So based on those stats, it’s hard to see the Reds getting within 13 points. Their defence is lacking and that will be their downfall once again.
TIP: Chiefs 13+ - $1.80 at CrownBet
Bulls vs Rebels (Saturday, Apr 21 11:05pm AEST)
This is an interesting matchup as the 3-4 Bulls host the 4-3 Rebels. The South African side has won two straight matches and they smashed the Sharks 40-10 last week. Meanwhile, the Rebels are 1-3 in their last 4 matches and lost against the Jaguares at home last week. So their form at the moment just isn’t there to beat the Bulls, especially in South Africa. They have lost all 3 matches against the Bulls on the road by 13+ so it’s likely going to be another tough outing. Since 2013, the Bulls are 30-11-2 at home and they’re 24-19 against the line at home. So back them to beat the line once again.
TIP: Bulls -10.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
Sharks vs Stormers (Sunday, Apr 22 1:15am AEST)
Round 10 continues as the Sharks and Stormers battle in Durban. Both sides will be desperate for a win so this should be arguably the closest matchup of the week. For the Sharks, they’re 1-4 in their last 5 matches and lost 40-10 against the Bulls at home last week. Meanwhile, the Stormers had the bye to think about a 52-31 loss versus the Lions. So both sides are showing weakness around their try-line. They’re averaging around 32 points per game this season and that should keep this close until the end. Which means the tri-bet is good value as I’m not confident in either side winning at the moment. But hopefully it stays close.
TIP: Either Team Under 8.5 Points - $2.15 at CrownBet
Brumbies vs Jaguares (Sunday, Apr 22 4:05pm AEST)
The round concludes in Canberra as the Brumbies play host to the Jaguares. They’ve never played each other at this venue so it should interesting. Especially since the Jaguares upset the Rebels in Melbourne last week. They’ve now won 3 straight matches in Australia so they should be confident of a 4th. Meanwhile, the Brumbies held with the Highlanders for a while last week but were overcome in the end 43-17. They’re a very inconsistent side so I do think the Jaguares are good value at the line. The Brumbies are 0-5 ATS in day matches and don’t seem to have enough points in them to blow sides away. The Jaguares love playing as an underdog so I’m going to back them to beat the line.
TIP: Jaguares +5.5 - $1.91 at Ladbrokes
