One again Before You Bet is back with our rolling Brownlow Medal Tracker for the 2018 season. We’ll be providing comments for every game of the season, along with our vote predictions to help with your projections for the 2018 AFL season.
Our Brownlow predictions are one of the most popular aspects of the site with punters able to scoop huge profits using the information found in these pages. You’ll be able to stay up to date with our current Top 20 2018 Brownlow Medal leaderboard, while there will be links to every single round-by-round voting posted there.
For those who need a refresher on how our Brownlow vote system works, we assign 6 votes per game so that our total votes are the same as the official 3-2-1 system, however we break up those votes as we see fit across potentially more than three players. Some games are really tough to call which way the votes will go, so a better predictive model is to split performances and assign half points to each player where there is doubt. So for example if two players dominate and it's too hard to split their performance, they are given 2.5 votes each, with the remaining 1 vote given to another player(s). This will give us a predictive total closer to their true total, rather than guessing. We can form a 'range' for each player (ie a min and max we think players can poll) with the thinking behind this that the variations from the half votes will even out over the long term.

Steele Sidebottom was a clear best-on-ground, winning the medal for 35 possessions and 3 goals. The minor votes are trickier with Brodie Grundy having a big statistical game with 25 touches and 32 hitouts, but direct opponents Matthew Kreuzer and Levi Casboult were also huge to nullify Grundy’s impact. Josh Thomas finished with 5 goals while Jack Crisp was a rock at half-back with 32 disposals and plenty of intercept marks.

The Lions gave the Power a massive scare, led by big man Stefan Martin who was enormous with 49 hitouts, 30 disposals, 7 tackles and a staggering 177 fantasy points. Jared Polec was the best for Port Adelaide with 29 touches, 12 marks and 619 metres gained for his side. Sam Gray should pick up a vote for 21 touches and 3 goals.

Max Gawn won the battle of the rucks against Todd Goldstein with 50 hitouts and 18 possessions to give his midfielders first use of the ball. Jesse Hogan was again a prolific ball winner all around the ground with a career-high 26 touches and a goal. Christian Petracca was also a good contributor with 25 touches and a goal. Ben Brown tried hard for the Roos with 4 goals.

A home game for Gold Coast in Perth, and they hit the lead in the 3rd quarter before dropping off late. Nat Fyfe was sensational for Freo with 38 touches, 15 clearances, 8 tackles and a goal. Michael Walters was good with 23 eye-catching possessions and two goals, while Ed Langdon had 27 touches. Jarryd Lyons played a lone hand for the Coasters with 30 touches, 10 tackles and two goals.

A tough, tight Sydney derby saw Callum Mills win the Brett Kirk medal for best afield for 26 touches across half-back. Lance Franklin was influential up the ground with 22 touches and 2 goals while big man Callum Sinclair had 45 hitouts, 14 touches and 3 goals. For the Giants, Stephen Coniglio was again their best with 27 disposals and a goal, while Jonathan Patton tried hard in the ruck with 19 touches, 14 hitouts, 10 tackles and a goal.

A difficult match to assess for votes with a lot of even contributors. Bryce Gibbs was one of the best with 26 touches, 10 tackles and a goal, while Rory Laird had 32 possessions across half-back. Sam Jacobs (20 possessions, 37 hitouts) and Paul Seedsman (26 touches, 2 goals) were also useful. The Saints got plenty of the ball with Ross (32 disposals), Savage (29 disposals) and Sinclair (23 disposals, 1 goal) in contention for a vote.

Richmond led all day and held on to win from a fast-finishing Hawthorn team. The backline of the Tigers were impressive with Nick Vlastulin (21 disposals, 10 marks), Bachar Houli (26 disposals, 11 marks), Alex Rance (19 disposals, 10 marks) and David Astbury (15 disposals, 8 marks) forming a wall that the Hawks couldn’t penetrate. Trent Cotchin was the main ball winner with 31 touches, while Jack Riewoldt finished with 4 goals up front. For the Hawks, Tom Mitchell was typically brilliant with 42 disposals, 8 tackles and a goal.

The Bulldogs dominated possession with Lachie Hunter best on ground with 35 disposals, 13 marks and a goal. Jack Macrae (30 disposals), Luke Dahlhaus (31 disposals), Bailey Williams (26 disposals, 12 marks, 1 goal), Toby McLean (25 disposals, 2 goals) and Caleb Daniel (27 disposals) will fight out the minor votes.

A swingy game would see West Coast come back late in the last quarter to record a tough win. Dom Sheed led the way with 30 disposals and two goals, while Andrew Gaff (29 touches, 1 goal) and Shannon Hurn (21 touches, 8 marks) were also good contributors. For the Cats, Sam Menegola was strong with 29 touches, 7 tackles and a goal, while Patrick Dangerfield had 33 possessions.
