We hit on just one of three bets in the last slate of A-League betting tips. The season continues this weekend giving us a chance to bounce back as we preview some of the key games of Week 18 in the A-League and give our tips below.
A-League Week 18 Betting Tips
Melbourne City vs Newcastle Jets (Thursday 7.50pm AEDT)
Melbourne City and Newcastle will face off in a battle of second vs third in the Week 18 opener on Thursday night. Newcastle suffered a shock loss as they went down to Wellington at home 3-2 but still sit 4 points clear of City in second place with a 10-3-4 record. Their goal scoring has been outstanding this season, slotting 37 goals through their 17 games so far.
Melbourne City have just one less win than Newcastle, but will be looking to rectify that and close the gap between second and third to just one point as they host the Jets at AAMI. City have been one of the more impressive teams at home this season, with a 5-1-3 record so far. They captured a dominant 5-0 win over Adelaide in Week 17 in a game where forward trio Daio Vidosic, Marcin Budzinski and Ross McCormack all found the back of the net.
If that trio can replicate some of the same form they did in the game against Adelaide, then City should be able to make a real game of this against the high powered offence of the Jets. The last nine games between these two clubs have resulted in at least three goals with five of them totalling over four. We like this to be another high scoring affair with both offences in good form at the moment.
TIP: Total goals OVER 2.5 - $1.81 at Sportsbet
Melbourne Victory vs Sydney FC (Friday 7.50pm AEDT)
The biggest rivalry in Australian soccer gets it’s second instalment of the season on Friday night as Melbourne Victory host Sydney FC at AAMI Park. Melbourne were fantastic in their 3-0 win over Western Sydney in Week 17, making it two wins in a row and six from their last ten games. They currently sit 4th on the table, just three points behind their cross town rivals in Melbourne City.
Sydney FC suffered another slight slip up on their otherwise perfect season in Week 17. A 1-1 draw with Central Coast left them seven points clear on top of the ladder with a 12-4-1 record. They have won seven of their last ten games but a game against an inform Melbourne Victory should be their biggest test in the last month.
Sydney have come up trumps against the Victory in all of their last five matches, although no margin has been more than one goal in those five games, the closest of which being a penalty shootout in last season’s Grand Final. High chance that this game is another low scoring slug fest, so we’ll take the value with a draw no bet.
TIP: Melbourne Victory to win (draw no bet) - $2.04 at Ladbrokes
Wellington Phoenix vs Adelaide United (Saturday 5.35pm AEDT)
Wellington captured what could be a season turning victory in Week 17, downing the Newcastle Jets 3-2 away from home to move within two points of Perth Glory. They are still on the bottom of the ladder, however, they have scored six goals in the last three games as their offence continues to improve.
Adelaide United were absolutely pulverised by Melbourne City in Week 17, going down 5-0 as three Melbourne goals were scored after the 88th minute. They currently have a 6-4-7 record and sit inside the top six but are winless through their last three games.
The last three games between Wellington and Adelaide have ended in draws, with the three before that all ending in Adelaide wins. We really liked the way Wellington played last weekend and with the struggles United have had going forward lately, Wellington should be able to earn victory at home.
TIP: Wellington to win - $2.50 at Sportsbet
