Derby Day is just around the corner with the Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival looming large. The Group 1 Victoria Derby will be the highlight on a day featuring exclusively black type racing along with another three Group 1 races.
Leading Australian bookmaker Palmerbet has the Derby covered to help you be first past the post this spring while familiarising you with all the racing lingo and Australian slang you’ll be dealt in the coming weeks.
Ace High comes up the favourite at $5.50 with Palmerbet after a strong win in the G1 Spring Champion Stakes. He’s a tough front running proposition who you can be assured will stay the trip of the Derby.
G2 Geelong Classic winner Weather With You was strong through the line and is on the second line of betting at $7.00. He’ll grow another leg if there’s any rain about and comes out of the astute Murray Baker-Andrew Forsman camp.
Both Main Stage and Tangled, ($7.00 each of two) come to the race following solid performances in the G3 Caulfield Classic where both ran on against the day’s bias. These gallopers could really jump out of the ground here getting onto the bigger track of Flemington.
The Matthew Cumani trained Greycliffe recently bolted in a BM64 race at Seymour at his most recent start, which has seen him firm up in betting at his $9.00 quote. He looks a promising galloper on the way up.
Astoria ($9.50) from the Godolphin team has an undeniable chance, although his sticky draw of barrier 1 could see him getting caught in traffic or boxed in on the rail.
Sully ($8.00) finds himself in a similar situation following the barrier draw after drawing the car park and is a big risk of being caught deep without cover throughout the staying test.
Having trouble interpreting some of the Australian-ism racing slang throughout the preview? Don’t worry; Palmerbet has you sorted with that too! Head over to Palmerbet’s Spring Racing Dictionary – to clear up any of those issues that will prevent you from missing the kick this Spring Carnival.
