Randwick Racing Tips for Saturday, September 2nd
Best Bet: Up 'N' Rolling (Race 2)
Best Value: Tom Melbourne EW (Race 8)
Race 1
Nice little race to start off. BEAU GESTE has been very well supported for his return here after winning his debut run by 2L back in May. He's trialled nicely on two occasions leading into this and draws barrier 1 so expect him to box seat as he did on debut. 1300m first up from a spell is a slight query, but when the money comes for Cummings runners it generally tells the story - as it did on Wednesday with Malahat. He's hard to beat, but I am really taken by the booking of Hugh Bowman on SUPER EX. Bowman chooses to ride this horse instead of Chris Waller's horse ANDAZ. Super Ex ran 3rd on debut in a strong form race behind D'Argento and Smartedge, before beating Catesby (who then won its next start). There was a 5L gap to 3rd on that occasion which generally indicates the front two are pretty smart. Last start he won by 2.3L over 1200m at Canterbury in a small field, and while he goes up in weight here and takes on a good field, with Bowman on from barrier 2 he can win again at $4.40. Look for a big run from DISSOLUTION who was Group 3 placed last prep and resumed with a solid run when 3rd behind Smartedge. DEVOLVING could be the value at $16 but Ron Quinton's runners have all been scratched lately so I'd be surprised if he ran.
TIP: Super Ex
Race 2
UP 'N' ROLLING is short enough at $2 but he looks one of the better bets of the day. This is a seriously good horse destined for better races than this. He absolutely bolted in first up over 1550m, and the horse he beat then came out and won on Wednesday, so clearly he is good. Second up last prep he was the biggest moral beat you'd just about ever see, and that was over 1900m, so the 2000m here should pose no problems. He has actually been scratched from the 1600m event in Race 3 in order to run here. Barrier 1 probably isn't ideal for this horse, but Kerrin McEvoy takes the ride. Bowman can't make the weight, but McEvoy is next best in Sydney at the moment. Very keen. DOUKHAN is first up for 385 days but he's not the worst each way bet at $61. He's placed in three of his five first up runs and has trialled twice coming into this. VAUCLUSE BAY and MULTIFACETS will be thereabouts, while ROMAN SON is one to stick with going forward. He strung three wins together last prep and looks a promising stayer. Very keen Up 'N' Rolling.
TIP: Up 'N' Rolling (Best Bet)
Race 3
Two horse race for mine. JAMINZAH is the $3 favourite after successive wins at Flemington over 1600m and 1700m. Makes his way up to Sydney now and finds a very suitable race. Hugh Bowman rides from barrier 6. The only query for him would be his first start at Randwick, especially after racing in Melbourne this whole prep. Regardless, we saw Waller do a similar thing with Sayed and he went on to win easily. MORE TO GAIN is the other and he profiles really well for this race. Didn't finish outside the top two in any of his five runs last prep, which included a win over this track and distance. First up he was very good when beaten 0.7L over 1350m at Rosehill. Two wins and a 2nd from three starts at the distance, a win and a placing from three starts when second up, draws well in barrier 5 and is sure to run a big race. I'll be having a good bet on Jaminzah and saving on More To Gain at $3.90.
TIP: Jaminzah
Race 4
Pretty keen on SCHEDULE here at each way odds of $7.50. We backed him last prep when he won a TAB Highway Handicap by 1.8L over this track and distance, and although this is a competitive race, I think he can win first up here. He's got two wins and a placing from three starts when first up from a spell, draws for a good run in midfield from barrier 3 and Kerrin McEvoy, who rode him to victory last prep, takes the ride again. MY TAGOSON was dominant when winning the Highway last start. Previous to that he ran 2nd to Prada Miss and that's a good form line. Only goes up 1.5kg in weight from his last start win and Bowman sticks with him. The big negative is obviously the barrier and the drop back to 1400m probably isn't all that suitable either. So I'm happy to take him on today. COUNT CUMANI has won back-to-back races at the Gold Coast and Ipswich. He's won both of those very comfortably and now steps up to the 1400m for the first time. Corey Brown rides for the Matthew Dunn stable, who is dominant in these races. I'll be having a saver on him at $4.80. MAFKI LASS can go close after a good run behind Care To Think over track and distance last start. LAST TRY WINS will do what he always does - he'll go back from the wide barrier and be running on.
TIP: Schedule EW
Race 5
Really interesting race given the make up of the field. There's only six runners going around here, but the pace is sure to be on with REDZEL and SUPER TOO lining up. Both horses have one tactic - lead and run them into the ground. I think Super Too will hold the front from the inside gate with Redzel on her outside. That will leave THE MONSTAR and possibly NIETA one pair behind them, with FELINES and SPIETH at the back. I think SPIETH is the best horse in the race, but I'm just not sure how well this race sets up for him. He will be last in the run and he'll have to be at his absolute best to win this. We haven't seen his best since February and he had problems during his last campaign with breathing issues. He did win fantastically well first up last prep, but he'll have to repeat that performance here. If he does, we'll know he's back. REDZEL is the one I'll be on. Group 1 winner last start and has a terrific first up record. He carries the big weight which is obviously some concern but less so over 1000m. He will be right up on the pace and depending on how many lengths ahead of Spieth he is on the turn, he could run them into the ground. NIETA is undefeated first up and has won four from five at the distance. This is clearly her biggest class test but she can go close.
TIP: Redzel
Race 6
We were with FORMALITY first up when she won and I think we can back her again here. It's a tough race once again, and she meets both horses that she fought out the finish with, but I think she will probably have improved plenty from that first up run, and she meets both ALIZEE and CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES 1kg better at the weights. She may have to sit outside the leader today from barrier 6, with JOYFILLY OURS likely to lead for the Waterhouse stable. CHAMPAGNE CUDDLES probably should have beat Formality first up, and she gets her chance here with a bit of speed sure to be on. She will settle back in the field from the widest barrier, but with the Waterhouse horse likely to run along, she will get her chance to run over the top. ALIZEE had race fitness on Formality last start and still couldn't get past, despite looking to have her cold at the 200m. With the improvement I expect Formality to take out of that run, I'm inclined to think Alizee will need to improve to win. In saying that, she will get the run of the race from barrier 1. SEANNIE is one to watch and include as the outsider of the field. She's very talented and her first up run wasn't all that bad at all in a very strong race. Back onto firm ground suits.
TIP: Formality
Race 7
Winx just wins. Still can't get over her first up win, and she takes on a field largely made up of stayers here and this is significantly easier than what she faced first up. She'll win in a canter. Best place chances go to RED EXCITEMENT, ANTONIO GIUSEPPE and LIFE LESS ORDINARY. Very keen to see how Life Less Ordinary measures up and happy to have a place bet at $3.30.
TIP: Winx (Life Less Ordinary to place)
Race 8
Fantastic race with a number of good chances but I like three in particular. The first is INVINCIBLE GEM at $4.40. I just think this mare is the real deal and I was very taken by her first up win over Le Romain. He's a multiple Group 1 winner and she gave him windburn. She just maps to get a lovely run in midfield from barrier 5, she's got a great record at the track and is undefeated at the distance. Like her chances. I also want to stick with TOM MELBOURNE. He was absolutely murdered first up over 1400m and really should have won. If he shows enough here they are possibly going to target him at some 1600m Group 1 races, and I think Waller has found the key to him. He's a very good horse and has a bit of race fitness on his side so I'll be with him at $6.50 too. ECUADOR will go straight to the front and be awfully hard to run down. Wasn't far away from Winx first up and has a good record at this track and distance. Gets a big weight relief today and is sure to be there for a long way. I think MCCREERY is the value at $14 with Bowman on. He's got a very good first up record with three wins and two placings from six starts. Draws well and no surprise to see him go very close here. HAPPY CLAPPER will be thereabouts.
TIP: Invincible Gem / Tom Melbourne EW (Best Value)
Race 9
Only four horses I want to mention here. WASHINGTON HEIGHTS clearly goes on top. He was as big a murder job as Tom Melbourne in the same race over 1400m last start, so he gets his chance to atone here. Previous to that run he produced a blistering performance to win at his first start back in Australia, so he's clearly come back in good order. McEvoy takes back over from Tim Clark, draws slightly awkwardly in barrier 2 given he gets back, but he deserves to be the clear favourite. ROCKET COMMANDER is ready to win at her third run back from a spell. She improved last start to be beaten 0.7L in Group 3 company, and her third up record suggests this is when she peaks. The Waller pair DAWN WALL and VELADERO can also both feature. Dawn Wall is first up and hasn't won below 1550m, but she's a very talented horse that could run well fresh. Veladero resumes as a gelding here and can go close.
TIP: Washington Heights
