Doomben is one of two tracks in Australia hosting Group 1 racing this weekend with all eyes on the Doomben 10,000. The track is currently rated a Soft 7 after rain throughout the week and with more rain predicted on Saturday I don't see that improving.
We have betting tips and comments for all 8 races below!
Doomben Racing Tips - Saturday, May 13th
Race 1
Pretty keen to be with INVINCIBLE EXPRESS here who is building quite an imposing after winning first up, which was her fifth win in a row. That was in this grade over this distance at Ipswich, she's got a good second up record and goes well on all ground. Drawn to get a good run from barrier 8 and can go forward or back, so I'm happy to lock in the $4.20 here. BETTER LAND has a good first up record and should get a great run from barrier 5 with Jeff Lloyd on board, and he has won his only start at this distance, though I still think he'll be better over further. TUMBLER gets a big drop in grade after finishing last in Group 2 company last start. She can bounce back, while the value could be the lightly raced HONOUR'N'STRENGTH who looks up to this grade and trialled very nicely leading into this. Don't discount MARSCAY FORCE.
Tip: Invincible Express / Honour'n'strength EW
Race 2
A few I'm interested in here at decent odds in another big field. Happy to follow the DON'T TELL MAMA formline and she looks a good price at $9.50. She hasn't finished outside the top 2 from five starts this prep and that includes two wins over this track and distance. She won last start in similar grade to this on a Soft track so she faces very similar conditions here today. Should get a great run from barrier 5 and looks very well suited. KUZNETSOVA was the horse she beat last start, and although Kuznetsova failed last start, she had excuses and is better suited here with a weight swing on Don't Tell Mama. has a good record at the track, distance and on Soft ground so at $10 she's another good hope. TIME TO TORQUE could be a value hope at $16. Won two starts back over this track and distance on Soft ground and his overall record at this track and distance is outstanding. Draws poorly but can feature.
Tip: Don't Tell Mama (Best Value) / Kuznetsova EW
Race 3
Really not a race where anything stands out and the top three that I settled on all have vulnerabilities. JUMBO PRINCE narrowly gets the nod for a few reasons. He's obviously the class galloper in the field and has to shoulder 3kg more than anything else in the race, but he's got a very good third up record and looks set to peak here. He draws well, has won three times at the distance, and goes very well on Soft ground with 6 wins from 11 starts. Should get a great run just off the speed and be ready to pounce late. CANTBUYBETTER finished 0.7L behind Single Gaze Last start and Single Gaze then came out and finished 2nd to It's Somewhat in Group 2 company so the form is strong. Actually beat Jumbo prince home by half a length last start but my concern is the step up to 1600m here having not won at the distance before. Appears better on firm ground but did place last start on Soft so while he looks a live chance, there are a couple of queries with him. PUNTA NORTE won last start over 1500m at Eagle Farm. Up in class here but down 5.5kg in the weights. Has a good record at the track and distance and a good enough record on Soft ground. Wide draw the main concern.
Tip: Jumbo Prince
Race 4
Settling on SNITZKRAFT here who just didn't handle the Eagle Farm track first up but still managed to run 3rd. He put in some dominant performances last prep, most notably an 8 length win at this track. He'll get a Soft track again but it'll be better than the Eagle Farm surface. TANGLED come here for Chris Waller after a Wyong win and although that win is nothing to shout about, I think they have a pretty decent opinion of this horse as the money really came for him last start. He was no less than three deep the trip in that race and still clawed his way to victory so I'm not underestimating him in this. SHE'S OUR STAR has form behind Houtzen and is definitely one to include, as is SHOWASHADOW at big odds first up from a break. OURS TO KEEP should be in the finish.
Tip: Snitzkraft / Tangled EW
Race 5
This is another race where I've got a few queries over some of those at the top of the market such as Morton's Fork and Good Standing, so I'll be having a bet on the New Zealand raider HALL OF FAME at $5.50. This horse is a Group 1 winner over 1600m, where he beat horses such as Jon Snow who then came to Australia and won a Group 1. Hall of Fame was beaten as favourite first up over 1200m in Group 3 company but he should be fitter for this and although 1350m is short of his best, he could still be too good. Draws very nicely and should get a great run.
Tip: Hall of Fame
Race 6
Two that interest me here. Prepared to take on STAMPEDE at the odds. I think $2.80 for a Waterhouse runner is poison at the moment and I'll be siding with two horses to upset the favourite. The first is one of the New Zealanders CHOCANTE who comes into this third up from a spell and has been gelded since his last run. Is a Group 3 winner over 2100m in New Zealand so the step up to 2000m should suit here. has won 4 from 7 on Soft ground and this isn't a deep field at all. THE CHAIRMAN looks a bit of value around the $9 mark. He comes into this third up from a spell too so he should be ready to peak given he normally needs one or two runs to really hit his straps. Draws well, gets in on the minimum weight and Brenton Avdulla rides so he ticks plenty of boxes.
Tip: Chocante / The Chairman EW
Race 7
I've got this between three horses here. RUSSIAN REVOLUTION goes on top but only narrowly and I think his price is well and truly rock bottom now. I wouldn't be taking anything under $3 for him but I do think he's the horse to beat. He had nothign go his way pre-race but he still won the Galaxy, and in the TJ Smith last start nothing went his way in the run. He gets a little gear change today and the key is there looks to be a bit of speed coming from out wide which should help him settle. He's the one they have to beat. REDZEL is stablemate could do so given he gets a 1.5kg weight swing on Russian Revolution for a 0.2L defeat in the Galaxy two starts ago. He's since won a Group 3 over this distance and he draws to gt a great run from barrier 3. I think the value in the race is DERRYN who ran a pretty good time when winning in Group 2 company on a Soft 7 in Sydney last start. The ground will be no concern for him and he also gets a nice run from barrier 6. He'll have to come from back in the field but the speed looks there to suit him and at $14 he is definitely one to include as an each way bet. MUSIC MAGNATE won well last start and won this race last year.
Tip: Russian Revolution / Derryn EW
Race 8
VELADEO looks to be coming into form nicely for this and with Mongolian Wolf scratched he looks the horse to beat for me. He beat Violate home by more than 5 lengths in the Packer Plate last start yet they are nearly equal in the market here after Violate's last start 2nd in Group 3 company. Waller just always gets these horses right for the big occasion and with McEvoy booked to ride I think he's clearly the one to beat here. $4.60 looks a very good price to me. SHOCKING LUCK will be much better suited up to 2000m here than 1500m last start when first up in Australia. Drawn to get a good run and should be competitive.
Tip: Veladero (Best Bet)
