Where to Attack?
Last season, the Saints would leak massive points to opposition defenders, and while they have improved in that area, they are still above league average for points conceded to opposition defenders. In particular they are giving up significant points in the wings and to rebounding defenders.
The Roos are among the worst in the league for giving up points to opposition forwards. Their defence is woeful and the likes of Jesse Motlop (95), Charlie Curnow (90), Corey Durdin (84), Zac Williams (79) and Will White (72) all scored very well against them last week as Carlton piled on 24 goals. Power forwards this week appear to be a foolproof, even if obvious, play this week.
The Dogs and Giants will be an interesting one with both teams featuring some heavy fantasy hitters. The Dogs do still have a weakness against key forwards, and the Giants have a couple of dangerous forwards that we could target.
Game Scripts: Lions wings and rebounding defenders, Power forwards, Giants key forwards
VALUE PLAYS
James Tunstill ($6,800) was pretty good last week for the Lions against the Pies, running up and down the wing to collect 15 touches and 59 fantasy points. Gets a fantastic matchup here against the Saints who are giving up points to wingers, so at near minimum price, Tunstill is very much in play.
Jake Stringer ($7,970) is also in play for the Giants based on his value price. Stringer is still finding his feet for the Giants, but playing out of the goal square is a good spot against the Dogs and considering he’s kicked 3.8 this season, he’s not far away from a bag of goals which could equal a big fantasy score against his original side.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Mitch Georgiades ($11,200) is the big forward I want on my side this week. The Roos have surprisingly dropped both Aidan Corr and Griffin Logue this week, so they look very young and vulnerable to the opposition power forwards. Georgiades has at times looked unstoppable this season with 15 goals and a high of 103 fantasy points. Looks set for a massive game here.
Jason Horne-Francis ($13,980) has been very impressive in recent weeks, not only with his output but with his consistency. With scores of 105, 100 and 125 in his last three weeks, his Draftstars price hasn’t got out of control, and being able to select him as a forward is a bonus. With a great match up against the Roos, JHF looks a strong play.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Tim English ($14,220) is my pick of the rucks on this slate. He’s been solid this season without being spectacular with a 101, 99, 114, 98 and 100 over the past five weeks. This looks a far more favourable matchup against Kieran Briggs who gave up 110 last match to Reilly O’Brien who has barely been mobile this season. English can assert his authority here as the premier big man on the ground, especially without any help from the injured Sam Darcy, and have a big score against a leaky opponent. It’s worth noting that English did produce two 150+ scores against the Giants in 2023 (once against Briggs) so a return to that form would be ideal.
Lachie Whitfield ($16,570) doesn’t fit with the game scripts but it’s worth noting his recent form this season as well as historically against the Dogs. Whitfield is averaging 116.3 this season and is coming off a huge 143 last week against the Crows. However when we dive into his history against the Dogs he has recent scores of 147, 100, 134, 130 and 121 in his last five against them. There’s some serious numbers there if you have the budget to afford him.
