Match Preview

The Sharks losing streak extended 2 matches with a last gasp loss to the Raiders on the road. Appearing to be the stronger team, they continually allowed the Raiders strong attacking opportunities. They gave themselves a strong opportunity to perform well with a 52% share of possession and an 86% completion rate, while also making 9.2m per carry. Unfortunately, they missed 31 tackles and made fewer metres per set. Their poor kicks to end attacking sets clearly disrupted their momentum.

The Sea Eagles were dealt a reality check with their 48-24 loss to the Storm. Without some players, a better performance was expected but they were outclassed from the opening moments. Only a few ‘garbage time’ tries narrowed the margin of victory. With an inferior share of possession (47%) and inferior completion rate (79%), they made significantly fewer metres. They also missed 34 tackles and allowed 9 line breaks. Their defensive structure needs a drastic improvement.

The Sea Eagles are expected to again struggle without Turbo at the back. As hard as they tried at times, they are nowhere near the team they can be with him on the field. The Sharks will sense this and want to use their opponents’ shortcomings to their advantage. It is no surprise the Sharks were willing to take this game ‘away’; the home team has won just once in the past 7 matches. That aside, the Sharks have also been victorious 4 out of the past 5 meetings. Defence is where this game will be won and despite averaging fewer points in attack (Sharks 22pg vs Sea Eagles 29ppg), the Sharks have a strength in this area. They have allowed just 19ppg compared to the Sea Eagles 24ppg; if a team cannot stop points against stronger teams in the competition, it will ultimately be their downfall.

After two poor weeks, expect the Sharks to click back into gear and use this edge to rediscover their attack and cover the line (the average margin of victory in the past 5 games is 15.2 points).

Leg 1: Sharks 1-12 – No further explanation than what is written above.

Leg 2: Hiroti to score – Iro has scored 5 times this year and, in his absence, Hiroti has a 100% strike rate. It is something about this side of the field which the Sharks appear to favour, regardless of who is wearing the number 4 jersey.

Leg 3: Olakau’atu to score – despite only crossing for one try this season, Olakau’atu’s form has been the best it has ever been. Expect him to attract plenty of attention with the ball but he will also put himself in try scoring positions often.

SGM Odds: $21 at BoomBet

Scooby's strength is assessing the overall team - what they offer across the field in a match and how the ethos of a club contributes to their success. Momentum also has a major impact on sports, and Scooby likes to explore this, while underpinning his judgement against a solid basis of statistical analysis. When combined with the aforementioned points, it combines for a holistic approach towards betting on rugby league.

Other sports he enjoys include Cricket, Horse Racing and NFL. There is a reason why Scooby ‘clicked’ with BYB from Day 1 - he loves his sport as much as we do.
