Weather
Melbourne - Light rain, 21 degrees
Launceston - Mostly cloudy, 16 degrees
Brisbane - Rain, 26 degrees
While conditions in Melbourne and Launceston should be cool but comfortable, it’s going to be torrential rain in Brisbane with up to 70mm of rain predicted. With rain all week in Brisbane, it’s hard to see how the Gabba won’t be anything but a wet mess. Keep an eye on weather reports in the lead up to the match.
Where to Attack?
There’s a number of ways you can attack this slate. The Tigers are the biggest underdogs so you would expect the ball to be in the backline quite a bit. The Saints are happy to give up points to opposition defenders so there’s opportunity to find some value in the Tigers defence. Saints mids and forwards are all very much in play.
With the rain in Brisbane, that’s going to make scoring difficult, which will reduce the fantasy output for marking targets and forwards for both sides. Expect more stoppages which will suit ruckmen and inside midfielders.
Game script: Saints mids/forwards, Tigers defence, Brisbane/Geelong inside mids
VALUE PLAYS
Luke Trainor ($6,000) is one of the young guns who looks like he’ll become a quality player for the Tigers. Produced good numbers in the junior ranks and has a good role at half-back, especially here against the Saints. Scored a 62 on debut and we’ll be wanting to see him link up for some +6’s in the back half to hit value.
Tom Lynch ($6,850) goes against the game script but his price is cheap enough to gamble. Lynch will be better for the run in the first round, and after a week off through suspension, will be raring to go again here. The Saints are no world beaters, and Lynch should get enough opportunity to kick a few goals and hit value for us.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Mitch Knevitt ($10,120) / Tom Atkins ($10,860) are two inside mids for the Cats who are right in play if wet conditions hit the Gabba. We already know Atkins is a tackling machine with 23 tackles in the first two rounds, which gives him a great fantasy floor before he even touches the ball. Knevitt is proven to also be strong on the inside with 18 tackles in two rounds. A slow, contested, scrappy game will be perfect for these two to get busy!
Josh Ward ($10,510) is an underrated cog in the early season success of the Hawks. Ward stepped up with the injury to James Worpel and has pumped out scores of 88 and 101 over the last two weeks as a pure midfielder. Has the right role in a good side and looks a good price to hit value once again.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Jack Sinclair ($16,820) / Jack Macrae ($16,720) / Jack Steele ($16,300) are the highest priced mids on the slate given the super soft matchup against the Tigers. The question is, how many ‘Jacks’ can you fit into one team? I expect Jack Macrae to be popular, given he went huge last week with a 153 and had a massive fantasy ceiling in his prime. Macrae is enjoying the freedom he’s been given at the Saints, but can you trust that to continue?
Josh Dunkley ($16,070) has started the season well with two solid ton-plus scores. Dunkley is the epitome of an inside midfielder and he’ll get conditions to suit in the wet at the Gabba against a plain-looking Geelong midfield. If Dunkley pushes 30 touches with 10 tackles, then another big fantasy score is coming!
