Weather
Adelaide – 26 degrees and a shower or two
Melbourne – 24 and showers in the morning and afternoon, up to 20mm
Perth – 29 and sunny
The weather in Adelaide and Perth is all clear and perfect for football. In Melbourne we can potentially expect heavy rain during the game. The MCG drains as well as any ground in Australia however given the forecast it could have a significant impact on the game play so plan accordingly with consideration of rucks and inside players.
Where to Attack?
Plenty of juicy targets on this slate going off 2024 performances. St Kilda gave up the most points in the league to backs by a wide margin last year and this is a trend that has been going since Ross Lyon took over as coach. During their preseason game against Port Adelaide they were massacred on the outside so I will be stacking up the Adelaide backs and outside players on this slate.
West Coast are another top tier target going off last year. They gave up one of the highest scores to inside midfielders and they come into this season with injuries in that position that will mean it is unlikely they have made much improvement. In addition, their coaching change has led to significant shift in game style where they are unlikely to control possession and will rather get behind the ball. As we saw in their preseason matchup they gave up plenty of possessions through the oppositions backline and midfield.
Game Script – Adelaide backs, Gold Coast midfielders
VALUE PLAYS
Jack Hutchinson ($6,060) has had an absolute ripping preseason from all reports in the West Coast camp and has looked to have sown up a role on one of the wings for West Coast. He has also been rotated through the inside midfield at times and in the Eagles preseason game against North had 51 fantasy points. If for some reason he is the sub you can easily pivot to Tyrell Dewar ($6,000) has looked electric on the wing for the Eagles through this preseason. He did start as the sub in the preseason game but was a key part of the Eagles chase down win and racked up a solid point per minute.
Bailey Humphrey ($8,280) has finally been getting opportunity at this natural inside position through this preseason with 12 centre bounces in their preseason game against Sydney where he posted 20 disposals and 65 fantasy points. I love inside midfielders against West Coast in this matchup and he makes for a good value play.
MID PRICED PLAYS
Jake Soligo ($11,960) looks underpriced as a mainstay in the Crows midfield this season. He had 80 fantasy points in the preseason game and attended 13 centre bounces. Last year he showed his fantasy potential with a ceiling over 100 points and will come into round one with an elite matchup against St Kilda who gave up above average points to inside midfielders in 2024.
Josh Worrell ($10,160)… as noted above the Saints were the team to target for half backs in 2024. We can never be certain whether those trends will continue heading into the next season, but if their preseason game against Port was any indication I will be stacking up back against them all year. Worrell will be getting plenty of action this year for the Crows (76 points in their preseason game) off half back and looks to be well priced heading into round 1.
PREMIUM PLAYS
Jarrod Witts ($15,440) will have one of the best matchups in the league for his position in Round 1 against West Coast. Last year these two sides met twice and Witts racked up scores of 141 and 135 in what were incredibly dominating performances. It doesn’t appear that West Coasts ruck stocks have improved from last year and we saw North totally own the ruck in their preseason contest.
Matt Rowell ($14,470) also dominated his matchups last year against West Coast. As we noted above the Eagles were one of the best matchups for inside midfielders in 2024 and Rowell took full advantage posting scores of 122 and 117 into contests.
