NFL Week 1 Monday Betting Tips
Jacksonville Jaguars at Miami Dolphins
Monday September 9th, 3.00am (AEST)
The Dolphins are one of the hot picks to win the AFC East this season and a smokey for the conference. They had to lose some talent in the offseason due to contract issues, but they kept the majority of their core including their star duo of wide receivers in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. They even added another key ball carrier in Odell Beckham Jr, although time will tell whether that move proves to be fruitful.
The Jags didn’t have an extremely busy off-season, but made the moves that they needed to make, most notably resigning star quarterback Trevor Lawrence to a massive $275m contract. They finished 2nd in the AFC South division with a 9-8 record last year and will be banking on natural progression and a solid outing at the draft to take them to the next level.
Like the look of Miami at home here. They went 6-3 against the spread at home last season and were great at covering as a favourite, going 9-2 in that regard. Their weapons on offence are testament to that. When they are better than their opposition, they generally like to run it up.

Dallas Cowboys at Cleveland Browns
Monday September 9th, 6.25am (AEST)
The Cowboys finished the 2023-24 season with an equal best record in the NFC at 12-5 and while owner/GM Jerry Jones said they were going to be busy in the off-season, they ended up doing not much at all. They strengthened up their offensive line, using two of their first three draft picks in that department, but otherwise will go into the season with largely the same core.
The Browns were a polarizing team last season, finishing 2nd in the AFC North with an 11-6 record before being bounced out of the playoffs in embarrassing fashion at the hands of the Texans. They had a relatively busy off-season, signing on star wide-receiver Jerry Jeudy, but there is no doubt their hopes will hinge on the fitness, and stability of Deshaun Watson at quarterback.
Staying away from the line here as I think the bookies have this one bang on the money with the Browns a 2.5 point favourite. Leaning towards the unders here. These are two of teh best defenses in all of football. The Browns held their opponents to 20 or fewer points seven times last season and kept them to just 13.9 points on average, at home.

Los Angeles Rams at Detroit Lions
Monday September 9th, 10.20am (AEST)
The marquee clash of the day sees the Detroit Lions hosting the Los Angeles Rams from 10.20am (AEST). The Lions have been the sexy pick to go one step further this season and become a true powerhouse in the NFC after finishing last season 12-5 atop the North division. They weren’t super active in the off-season but strengthened some areas on the offensive line which should make a difference for the re-signed Jared Goff.
The Rams offseason was made up of what felt like last ditch attempts to stay relevant for another season before I think they inevitably bottom out in the coming years. Although they finished 10-7 last season, they never really felt like a contender in the NFC, and I expect them to regress slightly this year, with their win total currently sitting at 8.5.
Like the look of the Lions to get their season off to a hot start at home here. The line has moved from 3 points to 3.5 in their favour and I’m happy to side with the money. The Lions are 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games.
Lions -3.5
