2024 NRL Round 23 Preview & Betting Tips
Newcastle Knights vs Wests Tigers
McDonal Jones Stadium, Sunday 11th August, 4:05pm (AEST)
Both sides won't be playing Finals, but Newcastle at Newcastle on a Sunday afternoon is always a good spectacle. The Knights did show good fight last week against the Penrith Panthers, premiership favourites, but in the end, class came to the fore and Penrith were too good, but I thought there was plenty of merit in the performance of Newcastle, with the halves combo of Gamble and Crossland seemingly working well. They're back at home and despite a couple of key players out, they do look extremely hard to beat.
The Tigers do look stronger in terms of their team vs the one they fielded last week. I thought they were gallant against the Cowboys last Thursday, especially when down to 12 men. They could have easily lost by 40-50 but they showed ticker and for a brief period, looked as if they'd complete a remarkable comeback, but the 12 man angle told late and were overrun by North Queensland. Aidan Sezer returns at halfback, Adam Doueihi is back from a two game back so they do field a stronger team IMO and they generally do play pretty well at Newcastle.
Match Prediction: I am tipping Newcastle to win but I do think that the price gap between the two sides is far too great IMO. The Tigers did more than enough I thought last week against the Cowboys to suggest they can more than hold their own against Newcastle.

Under 51.5 Match Points: Could get this completely wrong, but I reckon this game could be somewhat of a scrap. I don't see a great deal of creativity in the respective halves combos so I think individual brilliance will be prevalent in terms of scoring.
Greg Marzhew 1+ Tries: Very quiet start to 2024 but his last couple of months has been quite impressive in terms of try scoring prowess. He's a hulking winger and generally, the wider the defence of the Tigers, the worse they get.
Tigers +14.5: As stated above, I do think Newcastle will win, but I don't think it'll be a blowout so I am going with the Tigers with 14.5 start as a relatively safe play.
