2024 AFL Round 17 Preview & Betting Tips
Brisbane vs Adelaide
Sunday 4:10pm AEST, July 7th, Gabba
It was a horror first seven rounds of the season for Brisbane who had amassed five defeats during that span, and this led many to believe that they were no longer competing for the ultimate prize in season 2024. However, here we are 10 weeks later with the Lions sitting in eighth spot on the ladder and only a game outside the top four!
The Lions enter Round 17 on a four-match win streak and have only been defeated once during this stretch, which came against another one of the form sides in the Hawks in Round 11. Most recently, the Lions recorded a great comeback at home against the Demons to prevail by five points (86-81).
In fantastic scenes for fans, former #2 draft pick Will Ashcroft made a successful return from an ACL injury last weekend. He spent most of his time on the wing but also had spurts on ball and finished with 18 disposals. For this week, Jack Payne will return from injury and replace Darragh Joyce (omitted).
Adelaide returned from their bye in Round 16 to record a strong win at home against a quality outfit in the Giants (94-78). The win was set up in the first half thanks to a dominant performance from superstar Izak Rankine who collected 20 disposals to go along with two goals.
The Crows will now be aiming to record consecutive wins for just the second time in what has been a bitterly disappointing season. Mathematical, they’re still alive in the finals hunt as they’re only three wins outsider the top eight, but with so many teams in far better form you would think they’re only playing for pride at this point.
On the back of last weekend’s win, the Crows have made only the one change at selection which is hardly a surprise. Will Hammill has been omitted and veteran Brodie Smith returns to the seniors in a like for like switch.
Match Prediction: The Crows showed some fight last weekend but that was on their home deck where they’ve performed far better than on the road this campaign. And unfortunately for them, they now take on one of the form teams in the competition in the Lions who are really starting to flex their muscle.
On recent form, it’s hard to foresee anything other than an easy Lions win, and that’s exactly the direction we’ll be going to close out Round 17!

Brisbane to Win – Loving their form right now and should be too good at home.
Charlie Cameron 2+ Goals – Hasn’t been great in front of goal this year but gets a nice matchup against the Crows who lack leg speed in defence. He should get out the back for a couple here.
Will Ashcroft 20+ Disposals – Liked his return game last weekend and should only improve on that. He’s a natural ball winner.
Darcy Wilmot 20+ Disposals – He’s having a fantastic season and provides plenty of run off half back. Like him in the disposal markets again here.
