With the Australian sports betting landscape burgeoning with operators, it was probably only a matter of time before we would see an acquisition or two.
While there have been whispers of betr looking at the Pointsbet Australia business, it came as a surprise to many affiliates when they were informed on Thursday that Moneyball Australia had been acquired by Dabble.
Moneyball Australia, the former leading daily fantasy sports site, only relaunched as a mobile only sports betting site in 2021, and put a lot of investment into their mobile app product.
Meanwhile Dabble was also working hard on their own software. Created in 2020, Dabble took a while to gain a foothold, as their focus was the emphasis on the social elements of sports betting. The concepts of sharing bet slips, following other punters and copying bets was an innovative feature that many other bigger sports betting sites are still now trying to immitate in their own software.
In October 2022 Tabcorp acquired 20% of Dabble for a hefty $33 million price tag, and the latest acquisition of Moneyball assets shows their willingness to increase their digital foothold in the industry.
While it appears uncertain as to whether Dabble will continue to operate Moneyball independently from their own operations, affiliates have been asked to remove Moneyball creatives and branding from their websites, and have been informed that Moneyball will no longer be accepting wagers in the near future. That appears to indicate that the resurrection of Moneyball as a sports betting site is no more.
