AFL Round 14 Preview & Betting Tips
Richmond vs Hawthorn
MCG, Saturday, 4.35pm (AEST)
What a run it’s been for the Hawks over the past few months! Many thought they were wooden spoon contenders after falling to 0-5 through the opening rounds, they have now won six of their last eight games to climb into finals contention, currently sitting just one win outside the top eight.
After trailing by 19 points at the main break, the Hawks went on to kick 10 goals in the 2nd half to upset the Giants last week. Their forward line continues to impress, with Jack Gunston, Connor McDonald, Mabior Chol and Luke Breust all kicking multiple goals in the clash.
The win wasn’t without its setbacks though, as ruckman Ned Reeves went down with a back injury and will miss the game against the Tigers. Coming into the side for the Hawks will be Lloyd Meek and the Wizard Nick Watson.
It’s been a tough season for Richmond so far, but it’s been all positive news at Tigerland throughout the week as the media reflects on an upset win over Adelaide and builds up to Dustin Martin’s 300th game this weekend.
The Tigers stayed one game clear of the Kangaroos at the bottom of the ladder with the win, which was spearheaded by young forward Noah Cumberland, who booted three goals while Jayden short had 31 touches.
Their injury list is still without doubt the most extensive in the league, but there will be some respite this week as two of their stars in Dustin Martin and Tom Lynch return to the line-up, albeit at the expense of the injured Samson Ryan and Dion Prestia.
Match Prediction
The Hawks start as 15.5 point favourites here, which seems a little low to me given their recent win-loss record when compared to the Tigers. However, the Hawks run has involved a lot of close margins, with their last five wins in particular coming by an average of just 14.0 points.
I think the Tigers will be up and about for this clash given their star player is celebrating his 300th game, and the Tiger army should be out in full force for one of the few times this season. After a few drubbings from rounds 6-11, the Tigers have been more competitive over the last week, going down by 12 points to the Bombers, 30 points in Geelong after leading for much of the game, and capping it off with a great win in Adelaide.
I like them to cover this 15.5 point line.

Dustin Martin 2+ Goals – We’ve seen players get fed the ball in milestone games of late, the most recent being Jack Gunston just a few weeks ago. The Tigers are also desperate for some help in the forward line, expecting Dusty to play in the front half for the majority of this game.
Karl Amon & Jayden Short 20+ Disposals Each – Like the two running half backs to record 20+ disposals each for the last two legs of the multi here. Amon has been in great accumulating form of late, picking up 20+ in four of his last five and averaging 25.4 in that time.
Short has seen more midfield time for the Tigers with their extensive injury list of late and has been making the most of it. Had 31 in the win over the Crows and has had at least 20 in 7/11 games this season while maintaining an average of 22.0 touches.
