2024 AFL Round 13 Preview & Betting Tips

Hawthorn vs GWS

Saturday 1:45pm AEST, June 8th, UTAS Stadium

Hawthorn began the season poorly with losses in each of their first five games, and it looked as though they were going to be a wooden spoon contender; however, their form since Round 6 has been some of the best in the competition and they enter Round 13 with five wins from their past seven outings.

The Hawks resurgence has coincided with the return of Will Day who missed the first six rounds with a stress fracture in his foot. Day has been in scintillating form over the last four rounds and has helped turn their midfield group from one of the least effective in the AFL into a genuine force.

Nick Watson AKA ‘The Wizard’ played in the 2’s last weekend and wasn’t able to force his way back into the seniors despite 22 touches and four goals for Box Hill, while Chad Wingard also needs to remain patient despite kicking four himself. Unsurprisingly, the Hawks have opted to remain unchanged from last weekend’s side that torched the Crows.

The bye came at the right time for GWS who have had a rough trot with injuries over the past month or so. Despite that, they were able to secure a fantastic win on the road against the Cats in their recent outing to snap a three-game skid.

A couple of key Giants won’t be making the trip to Tasmania on Saturday, with Stephen Coniglio and Harry Perryman both going down with injury against the Cats. On a positive note, Callan Ward and Callum Brown are fit to return.

Injuries breed opportunity and there was a big example of that at the Cattery when Leek Aleer made a couple of match-winning plays. He slotted in for the injured Jack Buckley but has shown he’s more than capable of playing at the level.

Match Prediction: At first glance, five wins from seven games seems as though the Hawks are absolutely humming, although when you take a deeper dive into some of those wins there’s certainly less merit. They’ve knocked over North which everyone’s doing, the Bulldogs who are as hot and cold as they come, the Saints who look to be a bottom four side, the Lions who are nowhere near last season’s form, and the Crows who just lost at home to the Tigers.

Yes, you can only beet who’s in front of you, but I can’t be having them priced as an even chance against a powerhouse like the Giants who will be ready to fire after their much-needed week off.

Tom Green 25+ Disposals – Has had 28+ touches in his last five full games and should be nice and fresh after the bye.

Will Day 25+ Disposals – Arguably the Hawks best and most important player. He’s been a revelation in their midfield and I don’t see him slowing down.

Dylan Moore 20+ Disposals – Had 27 touches and five goals last weekend, so clearly he’s in superb form and should be included in our SGMs.

SGM Odds: $4.75 at BoomBet
