2024 AFL Round 4 Preview & Betting Tips
West Coast vs Sydney
Saturday 1:30pm AEDT, April 6th, Adelaide Hills
West Coast kicked two of the first three goals of the game against the Bulldogs and went into quarter time behind by only two points in their Round 3 meeting. However, their intensity, pressure, and structure all significantly fell away after the first break as they were outscored 90-16 from that point onwards to eventually lose by 76 points (106-30).
The Eagles actually won the clearance battle against the Bulldogs (37-28) and were only narrowly beaten in the contested possession count (128-134), but their connection from their midfield to their forward line was almost non-existent. The Eagles kicked only two goals after quarter time and recorded their lowest ever score at Etihad Stadium.
In contrast, Sydney have started the season in hot form although their worst performance of the year was their most recent one. They were outworked by a hungrier Richmond side last weekend when they were upset by five points on the road (77-82).
Regardless, the Swans have looked every bit of a contender through the first portion of the season and enter Saturday’s fixture in sixth spot on the ladder and with a chance to improve to top spot with a big win. In positive lineup news, star recruit Taylor Adams will debut for the club on Saturday after overcoming an injury he picked up in a pre-season hitout.
Match prediction: The Eagles enter Round 4 having lost 22 of their past 24 games and the majority of their losses have been by huge margins. Their worst performance in those 22 losses was against the Swans last season when they were embarrassed by 172 points (34-205) in one of the darkest days in the club’s history. Needless to say, the Swans will start this fixture as the overwhelming favourites, with the line currently sitting at a whopping 60.5 points.
The Eagles have struggled mightily to kick a competitive score so far this campaign, scoring just 143 points in total across their three fixtures. Still, the total points line has been set at 178.5 which seems rather high considering there’s been totals of 151 and 136 in the past two Eagles games, while the under has hit in five of the Swans past seven fixtures. With that in mind, I’m keen to have something on the unders here.

Logan McDonald 2+ Goals – Has kicked nine goals from four games so far including three against the Tigers last weekend. He’ll certainly get his chances to add to his tally.
Isaac Heeney 2+ Goals – Spending most of his time in the midfield but has still kicked six goals this season. He’ll float forward frequently and should get on the end of a few.
Isaac Heeney 25+ Disposals – Heeney is averaging 28.5 disposals per game and his lowest game is 26 in four games. Confident he gets to at least 25 against the Eagles.
Errol Gulden 25+ Disposals – Hasn’t set the world on fire this year but still averaging 25 disposals per game. He’ll be running hard all day and could have a massive game.
