2024 AFL Round 1 Preview & Betting Tips
Fremantle v Brisbane
Sunday 6:50pm AEDT, March 17th, Optus Stadium
Fremantle hosts its first match of the season for premiership points as it takes on last year’s grand finalists, Brisbane.
Fremantle coach, Justin Longmuir, will be desperate to achieve a higher finish this season compared to last, and gets a home game first up which will be of hope.
Elsewhere, Brisbane have had nine days to smart over letting go of a seven-goal lead against Carlton in Opening Round and will be keen to make amends.
Keidean Coleman is out after sustaining a knee injury which is a big loss and Jarrod Berry may spend more time in the backline to counteract the loss.
Rory Sloane (Crows) and Tom Doedee (Lions) will also miss for their respective clubs with both teams at about 90% health.
The Lions started liked a rocket last week so it will be interesting to see what happens this week. Another positive start would take the Fremantle home crowd out of the game early which would enhance their chances.
Daniher will obviously be a focal point up forward for the Lions, while the Dockers goals will likely have to come from a wide range of contributors.
The Luke Jackson vs Oscar McInerny battle in the ruck will be telling, as will the gameplan of the Dockers. In the last few seasons, they have flipped between trying to be more defensive at times to a more attacking approach, with both having their pros and cons. But now it must all come together or their coach might be on the chopping block at seasons end.
Against Brisbane though, they might try safety first tactics and try and lock down their run with the likes of Rayner, McCluggage, and Bailey getting close attention.
Match Prediction: In my opinion, Fremantle might try and choke Brisbane early to avoid them flying out the blocks like they did last week, but in the end the cream will rise to the top and the Lions should come away with the four points. This Lions group is far too talented to be starting 0-2, even after giving up a poor second half against Carlton last week.

Brisbane to Win - After a terrible fade out last week, the Lions will be eager to bounce back.
Jye Amiss 1+ Goals - Should spend most of his time in the forward half and snare a couple.
Total Score Under 168.5 - Brisbane gave up many easy goals in the second half last week and I think both teams will be tight early, leading to the unders here.
