Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers

Brisbane Heat

Predicted XI: Colin Munro, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Sam Billings, Nathan McSweeney, Paul Walter, Michael Neser, Xavier Bartlett, Spencer Johnson, Mitch Swepson, Matt Kuhnemann

With Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne available, the Heat will be making at least two changes to their side. Josh Brown will almost certainly make way for Usman Khawaja, however who Marnus Labushcagne replaces will be a trickier decision. Given Nathan McSweeney’s form, it looks like Matthew Renshaw will be out of the eleven for Wednesday night’s fixture. Renshaw has scores of 17, 3 and 5 from his last three games and has scored above 20 since the Heat’s third game of the season.

The Heat’s bowling attack once again led the way in a thrilling one run win over the Hurricanes on Sunday night. The Heat had their worst performance of the season with the bat, being restricted to 7/132 on a challenging wicket at the Gabba. Their bowling attack came to save the day, having the Hurricanes 4/22 after a stunning opening spell from Xavier Bartlett.

Although Paul Walter was given the laudits for the final over, it was Spencer Johnson who bowled two crucial overs in the 13th and 15th to swing momentum back in favour of the Heat after a rain adjusted the final target for the hurricanes. Johnson’s over in the thirteenth went for just three runs which left the Canes requiring 31 from the final three overs. Johnson then backed it up with 2/7 from the penultimate over, including the wicket of the dangerous Tim David which proved to be the difference in the game.

Perth Scorchers

Predicted XI: Zak Crawley, Sam Whiteman, Aaron Hardie (c), Josh Inglis (wk), Laurie Evans, Cooper Connolly, Ashton Agar, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye, Hamish McKenzie, Lance Morris

The Scorchers will have a settled lineup as one of the only franchises not welcoming back Australian representatives, and that continuity could prove a big advantage given the Heat will be forced into changing a side that hasn’t lost a game this season. Lance Morris was a part of the Test squad at the start of the summer, however he has played in five of the Scorchers six games this season.

The Scorchers found a way to adapt in difficult conditions at the Sydney Showgrounds on Monday night, grinding their way to a seven wicket win over the Thunder. On a raging turner, Ashton Agar (2/6) and Cooper Connolly (3/25) held the Thunder to 8/136 which the Scorchers chased down in the final over thanks to a patient half century from Zak Crawley.

Whilst the Scorchers batting numbers may look slightly underwhelming given the standards they have set over the years, it’s important to note they’ve chased down low totals in three of their six games this season. Scorchers stand-in captain Aaron Hardie is the second most prolific run scorer in the competition with 273 runs at an average of 54.

Match Prediction

Both teams have built their success on the back of their bowling attacks this season, with the Heat having an average economy rate 7.07 and the Scorchers 7.53, the two most economical sides in the competition. Highlighting the quality of both bowling attacks has been their ability to win games without putting up big scores consistently. The Heat haven’t scored above 173 since their season opener, while the Scorchers have only scored above 173 twice this season.

The Scorchers have won six straight against the Heat, as well as nine of the last ten encounters between the two sides, and given the similarity of conditions in Perth and Brisbane, playing on the road shouldn’t phase them too much. Having Khawaja and Labuschagne return on paper boosts the Heat’s batting, however upsetting the continuity of an in-form side could be a major issue for the Heat. This will be a racking encounter, however the Scorchers will continue their strong form over the Heat.
