AFL Round 22 Preview & Betting Tips
Carlton vs Melbourne
Saturday 7:30pm AEST, August 12th, MCG
In what could easily be the match of the weekend in AFL Round 22, Carlton will lock horns with Melbourne in a blockbuster battle at the MCG on Saturday night. The Blues will be keen to ride the wave of momentum to lock in a finals berth, while the Demons are vying for important positioning in the top four.
Carlton’s current winning momentum first began in Round 14 when they thumped the Suns by 59 points. Fast forward to Round 22, and they’re now riding a seven-match win streak, including victories over top four sides the Power and the Magpies.
Not only have the Blues been winning all of their matches of late, they’ve also been doing it without a whole host of their best 22 due to injuries. The likes of Sam Walsh, Adam Cerra, and Harry McKay have all missed multiple games during this impressive run of form.
Also hitting some of their peak form at the crucial part of the home and away season is Melbourne. They had some troubles with form and injuries during the middle portion of the season but are starting to get their key cavalry back and enter this weekend on a five-match winning run.
Since their huge comeback win against a fellow contender in the Lions in Round 18, the Demons have looked the goods and their premiership odds have shortened accordingly. They’re also now a certainty to finish in the top four, but will be desperate to earn a top two spot to further strengthen their chances in September.
If the Demons are to truly be one of the teams to beat in crunch time, they simply need to take care of the bottom four sides in the top eight, particularly Carlton who have a number of key personnel missing – as good as they’ve been without them.
I’d be seriously, seriously impressed if the Blues can knock over the Demons after such a straining run of games, especially with Clayton Oliver back bossing the midfield stoppages. On this occasion, I expect the Demons to prevail.

George Hewett 20+ Disposals – He’s back to playing some good footy and had 23 touches last weekend. Finally getting the opportunity to hunt the ball like he did so well in 2022.
Jack Viney 25+ Disposals – Been in fantastic form and I don’t think Clarry back hurts him much this week. Viney will still be in and around the ball for the majority of the match.
Christian Petracca 2+ Goals – Gets to play a bit more in the forward line with Clarry back. He’s a big game player and can certainly hit the scoreboard.
