Race 1: Albany Stakes (Fillies' Group 3) – 11:30pm AEST
It was all about the big priced winners on Day 3 and I’m diving straight in with a pick at big odds for the opener on Day 4 of the Royal meeting. That’s (4) FLACCIANELLO for Richard Fahey and jockey Rossa Ryan (who has already had winners this week). The filly won going away on debut at Catterick over 5f, goes up to 6f today which will suit. At nice odds she is a contender.
Of the others (1) Carla’s Way for the Crisford’s is another that won well on debut at Doncaster over 6½ f, the horse that come 2nd that day Star Of Mystery (Godolphin owned) has since gone on to win another race.
(10) Navassa Island was beaten by (13) Porta Fortuna in a Group 3 at Naas on debut and I fancy her to turn the tables around with that one this time.
(18) Soprano won on debut at Newmarket over 5f so steps up with improvement to come.
And finally (6) Jabaara for Roger Varian who also won on her debut at Newmarket over today’s distance. A lot of nice fillies set to run in this race.
Race 2: Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) – 12:05am AEST
(2) Little Big Bear for Aidan O’Brien will head the betting after winning the Group 2 Betfred Nifty Fifty Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock Park on his most recent start, his record last year was excellent (21111). Big contender.
I am going to take him on with (11) LEZOO for Ralph Beckett, disappointing in the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) at Newmarket over the mile, she is much better as a sprinter especially over the Commonwealth Cup distance (6f). Has Frankie Dettori in the saddle (who bagged a big winner yesterday).
(7) Sakheer gets a strong mention and although a bit risky due to his stalls antics, and (8) Shaquille is worth a look too.
Race 3: Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) – 12:40am AEST
Aussie Tom (Marquand) had a big winner yesterday for the King and the Queen and I fancy him to land the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes on (12) MAKSUD for Hughie Morrison, his race at Chester (finished 7th) on reappearance should have him ready to go today. Won on debut at Windsor and his form has been ok since. Could get back to winning ways today.
(17) Aimeric like Maksud is lightly raced and won on reappearance at Doncaster and could go well.
At bigger prices (16) HMS President and (15) Haunted Dream are also worth a look.
Race 4: Coronation Stakes (Fillies' Group 1) – 1:20am AEST
With the absence of Mawj this goes to (7) TAHIYRA at short odds. She was 2nd to Mawj in the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes at Newmarket then won the Irish version at the Curragh on her last start beating (3) Meditate who lines up again today. Top class.
I think (6) Sounds Of Heaven and (4) Queen For You will probably fill the places.
And let’s not discount (3) Meditate of course, she won the Group 3 Albany Stakes at the Royal meeting last year beating Mawj that day!
Race 5: Sandringham Stakes (Fillies' Handicap) – 2am AEST
A big field of 30 runners go in the Sandringham Stakes. Plenty in with a chance including (9) Coppice, (2) Jackie Oh and (14) Clounmacon but the 2 I want to shine the spotlight on are (26) MARKSMAN QUEEN who has only ran on the all weather so far but if she takes to the turf then at decent odds, she is worth a go with Hollie Doyle up.
The other I want to concentrate on is (15) Ma Belle Artiste for Joseph O’Brien. She won on reappearance over the mile at Killarney. Looks to have more to come.
At a big price (13) Bridestones could run well for each way punters, dropping down massively in grade.
Race 6: King Edward VII Stakes (Group 2) – 2:35am AEST
2nd in the Group 1 Betfred Derby at Epsom (5) King Of Steel will be the stand out horse in this but am going to be taking him on with (2) ARREST who was disappointing in the Derby but won the Group 3 Boodles Chester Vase Stakes by 6½ lengths before that. Dettori in the hot seat.
(3) Artistic Star I expect to fill the places.
Race 7: Palace Of Holyrood House Stakes (Handicap) – 3:10am AEST
A big field of runners to end Day 4. (28) Conquistador currently leads the betting as I type this and he is currently 2-2 for his new trainer George Boughey, previously trained by John and Thady Gosden. Previously ran over 7f but since dropping to sprint trips has been picking up the wins for his new trainer.
The 2 I like in this are (20) TATTERSTALL for Michael Dods and (24) Harry Brown for David Simcock who I both reckon have a good chance. Good luck!
