Sandown Racing Tips: Saturday May 27th

May 26th 2023, 1:35pm, By: Brendan Bunworth

Sandown Racing Tips

Ladbrokes Park (Hillside) circuit will host metropolitan racing in Melbourne on Saturday with a nine-race card on offer. The first of the day comes up 10 minutes before midday and the Quaddie legs look enticing with the first leg starting at 2:45pm. Runners will be likely running on a Soft5 or 6 with 10mls to fall on the track on Friday. My four best bets of the afternoon are below!

Sandown Racing Tips – Saturday, May 27th 2023

Race 5: Lamaro’s Hotel Handicap - 2:10pm (AEST)

(10) Simeon will go around at close to double figure odds here and I think he is worth a play after a sound 2nd at Flemington last start. On that occasion he led for the Busuttin&Young team and with Linda Meech on again, the same tactics should be on show again here. Barrier 2 suits and if he can go a long at a steady tempo early, he may be able to hang on this time.

(1) Dashing may sit just behind the leader but does have to carry a lot more weight with him carrying 59kg this time. Previous to the win, he was only beaten a head on 2 occasions. Very consistent.

(2) Elkington Road will want a Soft 6 track so the more rain the better. He is a run on type so will want the pace on. Jamie Mott is on again and has ridden him previously.

(3) Euphoric got up by a neck at Flemington last time and may start fav here. He has won 3 from 4 including 1 on the Soft.

(10) Simeon - E/W

$9/$2.70 (1 Unit)

Race 6: Tobin Brothers Bel Esprit Stakes - 2:45pm (AEST)

(6) Invincible Caviar jumped out well for the Moody team on May 9 at Pakenham and a week prior she was 3rd in a jumpout behind Oxley Jack and Sigh, with the latter winning in town last week. She is up in class and this is probably her toughest assignment yet but I think the Moody stable has been treading lightly with this one throughout her career. Linda Meech goes on and barrier 2 suits. She is 2 wins from 3 starts when first up.

(7) Katsu is the obvious danger and will start a clear favourite at around even money in this. She has won 3 from 4 on the Soft and the Begg stable has her flying. She will probably lead again for Childs.

(4) Taunting drops 200m and returns to the 1000m after an unpaced run in the 200K Wangoom at the Bool. Goes well over this distance.

(2) Esta La Roca is a quality horse and is first up. She goes well fresh and likes wet tracks. Zac Spain hops on for the 2nd time.

(6) Invincible Caviar - WIN

$4.40 (1 Unit)

Race 7: IVE Handicap - 3:35pm (AEST)

(1) Chief Altony has a bad barrier in 13 but he is a horse that does get back anyway so it might not be as bad as it looks. Thomas Stockdale is on and he has won twice on him before for the Alexander Rae stable and on a Soft track, he should be ready to fire second up from a spell. With this guy, the wetter is better, so if it's raining on Saturday morning, that is a bonus. He has won on this track before and 1400m looks ideal after a solid 7th in the Wangoom (beaten 2L).

(6) He’s Our Bonneval likes the Soft and has Ollie on. He hit the line well last start when 4th at this track and he will be making his run alongside the Chief.

(15) Danaustar has won 3 from 6 on the Soft and will settle on pace in this event. With quite a few backmarkers in the race, he should be in this for a long time.

(13) Flash Flood has drawn wide in 15 but is very fit. He loves the wet but does normally settle midfield which will be tricky for Carleen Hefel here. Needs luck.

(1) Chief Altony - Place

$3.10 (2 Units)

Race 8: Marshall White Handicap - 4:05pm (AEST)

(16) Brayden Star is fitter again for this and Ollie stays on. Though he has never run on the Soft, this Great Britain import has handled the Heavy before when running a placing so the track should be fine. He will settle a couple of lengths in front of a couple of his main rivals and I think that will be the key here. They will be coming hard late but I think he can catch a break at the 200m mark. He was 2nd behind British Columbia last time at this track but Brayden Star has dropped 3kg in weight this time.

(5) French Emperor could not have been more impressive when 2nd to Altivo last start and that horse went on the following week to get done a nose. He will get back and he will be running on.

(3) Green Fly is another who will be running on but if they get controlled sectionals in front then his task will be made harder.

(8) British Columbia is very fit and returns to 1600m. He has won 3 of 4 starts at this track.

(16) Brayden Star - WIN

$4 (2 Units)
