EPL 2022-23: Matchday 20 Preview & Betting Tips

Manchester United vs Manchester City

Old Trafford, Saturday 14th January, 11:30pm AEDT

Manchester United host crosstown rivals Manchester City looking to extend their winning streak to five games, and put a massive dent in City’s title aspirations. Arsenal’s draw with Newcastle has seen the defending champions move to within five points of the league leaders. The opening fixture of the weekend presents as one of the most crucial Manchester Derby’s in recent history, given the impact this result will have on the title race, and the top four.

Manchester United are beginning to hit their stride under Erik Ten Haag, and have completely changed their system for the greater good. The Red Devils aren’t scoring as much, however they’re much stronger defensively, and have been more efficient in attack this season. Although they’re great improvements, Ten Haag’s system doesn’t match up well against the scoring power that Manchester City have. Despite being fourth on the table, United rank 9th in scoring (27 goals). In comparison, City are the number one ranked attacking side in the league with 44 goals, led by Erling Haaland who leads the Golden Boot race with 21 goals. The fact the entire Manchester United side have only scored six more goals than Haaland has this season, shows the discrepancy in attacking prowess between the two sides.

The defending champions have had the wood over their crosstown rivals, having won the last three Manchester Derbies, by an aggregate scoreline of 12-4. The most recent fixture was earlier this season, when hattricks from Haaland and Phil Foden saw City pick up a dominant 6-3 win. City have obliterated this Manchester United defence time and time again, and given the form Haaland is in, it’s difficult to see that changing. City will continue their dominance over United, and will keep the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the table.

Brighton vs Liverpool

American Express Community Stadium, Sunday 15th January, 2:00am AEDT

On the back of a 4-1 victory over Everton, Brighton take on Liverpool, with a chance to leapfrog over the Reds into seventh position on the Premier League table. Liverpool’s nightmare season continued on Matchday 19, with an embarrassing 3-1 defeat to Brentford. The 3-1 scoreline humbled the Reds, who were dominated from start to finish.

Despite losing Graham Potter during the season, Brighton has found a way to remain inside the top half of the table, with four wins in their last six games. The Seagulls had a drop in form after Potter left, going winless in five games, but they steadied the ship and remain a live chance to finish in a Conference League position. Both Brighton and Liverpool have been excellent in attack this season, ranking sixth and fourth respectively. This game will come down to which defence can hold up for longer, which leans towards the Reds, who have the sixth best defence in the Premier League.

Another factor leaning in the Reds favour is their track record against Brighton, since the Seagulls were promoted to the Premier League in 2017. Liverpool are 7-3-1 in the eleven Premier League games they’ve played against Brighton, with an aggregate score of 25-9. The Reds have found ways to pick apart this Brighton defence, and it’s difficult to see Brighton finding a way to keep Liverpool at bay. This will be a fascinating clash, but Liverpool will be too strong.

Tottenham vs Arsenal

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Monday 16th January, 3:30am AEDT

Matchday 20 concludes with the North London Derby, with Tottenham looking to get back into the top four, whilst Arsenal will be looking to maintain their breathing space at the top of the Premier League table. The Gunners played a scoreless draw against Newcastle last week, with Arsenal unable to convert their dominance in general play. Arsenal had 67% possession and 17 shots on goal, but only four were on target as they were kept at bay by a resilient Newcastle defence.

After an excellent start to the season, Tottenham have won just three of their last eight games and have fallen out of the top four, despite having played more games than fourth placed Manchester United. Spurs did pick up a 4-0 win over Crystal Palace on Matchday 19, however it’s going to be a much tougher task against the league leaders on Monday morning. Arsenal are the second best attacking side in the Premier League (40 goals scored) and the second best defensive unit (14 goals conceded). Although Tottenham have been a high scoring team this season, they’re not a strong defensive side, and will be vulnerable against the Gunners if they can’t win the midfield battle.

Arsenal have won three of their last four Premier League fixtures against Tottenham, including a 3-1 win when the two sides met back in October. The Gunners dominated that contest, with 67% possession and 22 shots on goal to Tottenham’s 7. Led by Granit Xhaka, Arsenal gained control in the middle third, and will be looking to repeat the same formula on Monday morning. Arsenal were furious after last week’s draw, and with the added incentive of a North London Derby, the Gunners will be out to make a statement in this game. Arsenal won’t want to give City an opportunity to gain more ground in the title race, and will produce a convincing performance against an inconsistent Spurs side.

More EPL Matchday 20 Tips

Aston Villa vs Leeds (Saturday 7am AEDT)

Aston Villa will look to get back on the winners list after a disappointing draw at home to Wolves last start. Villa were flying prior to that with four wins from their past six matches which propelled them to 11th on the table. Despite underperforming last start, you have to fancy their chances of bouncing back against a Leeds outfit that have only two wins from their past 14 games.

Everton vs Southampton (Sunday 2am AEDT)

Both Everton and Southampton will see this fixture as an opportunity to kickstart their season. The Toffees have only picked up one point from their last five, while the Saints have lost six on the spin. Neither team have kept a clean sheet in their last five fixtures and that’s a streak I expect to extend on Sunday morning.

Both Teams to Score (1.85 at TAB)

Nottingham vs Leicester (Sunday 2am AEDT)

Nottingham were able to capitalise on their matchup with an out-of-sorts Southampton in Matchday 19. The got the chocolates via a 1-0 score line to make it 11 points secured from their past seven games. They now face a Leicester side that have lost three in a row and have only scored once during that stretch. This is the perfect opportunity for Nottingham to build on their momentum and I expect them to take it.

Wolves vs West Ham (Sunday 2am AEDT)

The Wolves have put in some improved performances over their last three games when picking up four points. They earned a solid point away at Aston Villa last time out and were winners three games back against Everton. In that sort of form, they deserve to be the favourites at home against a Hammers side that are winless in their last six.

Wolves ($2.62 at TAB)

Brentford vs Bournemouth (Sunday 4:30am AEDT)

Brentford have been absolutely red-hot on either side of the World Cup break. They come into this weekend unbeaten in their last six matches and have collected three wins during that run. They’re also 3-2-0 in their last dive at home and that sort of form stacks up extremely well against the struggling Cherries.

Brentford ($1.61 at Neds)

Chelsea vs Crystal Palace (Monday 1am AEDT)

Chelsea are in horrible form but will still start as the odds-on favourites against Palace due to their own poor form. The Blues have secured just four points from their last seven games and have only found the back of the net on five occasions during that stretch. Palace have also struggled to score recently and have been held goalless in three of their last four league matches. All signs lead towards a low-scoring affair on this occasion.

Under 2.5 Goals ($1.76 at Ladbrokes)

Newcastle vs Fulham (Monday 1am AEDT)

Newcastle have played out two nil-all draws in their last two outings and while the lack of goals scored is a concern, their defence certainly is not. In fact, the Toon have kept four clean sheets in a row and have conceded just two goals from their last nine league matches. In this sort of form, they should have no problem winning comfortably against Fulham

Newcastle -1.5 ($2.42 at TAB)
