Cairns Taipans vs New Zealand Breakers
Friday 7:30pm AEDT, Cairns Convention Centre
Two of the great surprise packets in NBL23 will lock horns for the second time this season on Friday night. The Taipans are fresh off a couple of strong wins against United and the Bullets, while the Breakers took care of the JackJumpers and the 36ers last weekend. This sets up what should be a terrific contest between two of the top three teams on the ladder.
In their first meeting, which was around four weeks ago, the Breakers overcame a 5-point first quarter to secure a 68-64 win on the road. The low-scoring aspect of that game was no fluke either, as these teams play the most physical defence in the league. I’m not expecting that to change on Friday night and that makes the unders in the total points market the best value play.

S.E. Melbourne Phoenix vs Illawarra Hawks
Sunday 4pm AEDT, John Cain Arena
Fresh off their big win in the Throwdown against Melbourne United, the Phoenix will be looking to build some momentum heading into the halfway point of the season. They’ve looked a much stronger and more reliable outfit since getting their key players back on the court, and they’ll certainly be confident of pulling off another win against the bottom-of-the-ladder Hawks.
The Hawks have had a nightmare season under new coach Jacob Jackomas. He had huge boots to fill with Brian Goorjian leaving, and he just hasn’t had anything go his team’s way to date. Their recent loss against the Kings was an absolute heartbreaker, although it was certainly an improved performance. As long as they bring that same effort and intensity again here, then they should be able to cover the huge spread.
