Brisbane vs Melbourne
Sunday 2:40pm AEDT, Brighton Homes Arena
The two best sides of Season 7 face off at the brand new Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield Central in what is set to be an enthralling Grand Final. Brisbane will be looking for their second flag in three seasons after claiming the 2021 premiership, in what will be their fourth Grand Final appearance. Melbourne are in their second Grand Final for the calendar year after falling short by thirteen points in the 2022 AFLW Grand Final. Will Daisy Pearce have her fairytale moment to cap a stellar career? Or will Craig Starcevich's side establish themselves as one of the best in the history of the competition?
During the week Ally Anderson was crowned the AFLW best & fairest, giving Brisbane two league best & fairest winners back to back after Emily Bates claimed the top honour last season. It highlights the dominance of the Lions midfield over the past few seasons, with the midfield battle looming as the most crucial aspect of the game given the evenness of the two sides. Brisbane are the number one ranked attacking team in the competition and the number two ranked defensive side. Melbourne are the number one ranked defensive outfit and the number two ranked offensive side in the league. Whoever can get on top in the centre of the ground will go a long way towards winning the game, if the Lions can gain ascendancy in the the midfield, it's going to make it difficult for Melbourne to score consistently going end to end.
Both sides finished the home & away season with 9-1 records and were separated by just 0.3%. The two clubs are beginning to build a rivalry, after the Demons ended the Lions campaign in last season’s Preliminary Final. Brisbane won by 15 points at Casey Fields when the two sides met in Round 4, and with the form they’ve shown forward of centre all season, will hold them in good stead regardless of what the game throws up on Sunday afternoon. The Lions have an abundance of big game experience, featuring in six of the seven finals series across the history of the competition. Having won the premiership in 2021, and having played in three other Grand Finals, it will prove crucial to the hopes claiming the club's second premiership. This will be an epic contest, but the Lions will be too good with their all conqouring forward line that has averaged 52 points per game this season.
