EPL 2022-23: Matchday 12 Preview & Betting Tips
Liverpool vs West Ham
Anfield, Thursday 20th October, 5:30am AEDT
On the back of their biggest win of the season, Liverpool take on West Ham with an opportunity to bridge the gap on the top four. The Reds handed Manchester City their first loss of the season, which ended a three-game winless streak. Despite having 25 shots on goal and 61% possession, West Ham were held to a 1-1 draw against eighteenth placed Southampton.
Despite struggling this season Liverpool are still the fourth most prolific attack in the Premier League (21 goals). Liverpool haven’t had any troubles against the Hammers defence in recent years, scoring two or more goals in ten of their last twelve Premier League fixtures against West Ham.
Liverpool have had the wood over West Ham over the last five years, winning nine of their last eleven Premier League games against West Ham. Across those eleven matches, the aggregate score is 30-10 in favour of the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be full of confidence after their spirited performance from the weekend and will carry that momentum against West Ham.

Newcastle vs Everton
St James’ Park, Thursday 20th October 5:30am AEDT
Newcastle will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to six consecutive games when they take on Everton on Thursday morning. Newcastle added another draw to their 3-6-1 record after a 0-0 stalemate with Manchester United last weekend, while Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham.
Everton’s defence kept the Toffees in a lot of games early in the season, however they’ve conceded four goals in their last two games as opposing teams begin to find new ways of breaking them down. Everton can’t compete with the attacking firepower that Newcastle have, so they’ll be looking to turn this into a defensive game. The Toffees have lost the possession battle convincingly in their last three games as a result of this defensive style, and it’s going to allow Newcastle to dominate territory.
As long as the Magpies can convert the dominance they’ll have in general play into goals, the result will be a formality. Newcastle have a variety of players capable of testing the Everton defence, with nine individual goal scorers this season. Newcastle will be looking to remain in the top four race and will be too good for the Toffees.

Manchester United vs Tottenham
Old Trafford, Thursday 20th October, 6:15am AEDT
It’s a battle of third vs fifth with Manchester United hosting an in-form Tottenham.
Spurs come into this fixture in the midst of a seven-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, after beating Everton 2-0 on Matchday 11. Manchester United dropped valuable points in the top four race, after a 0-0 draw against Newcastle in a game that they dominated.
Although most of the attention this season has been placed on Arsenal and Manchester City, Tottenham are quietly going about their business with 7-2-1 and sit equal on points with Manchester City. Spurs’ balance at both ends of the pitch has been the key to their success, possessing the second-best defence (10 goals conceded) and the third most prolific attack in the Premier League (22 goals scored).
Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son will be the key factors in this clash, coming up against a Manchester United defence that is ranked fourteenth in the Premier League, and has looked shaky this season. Kane and Son have both scored three goals across their last four Premier League games against the Red Devils. Tottenham have been firing on all cylinders, and United haven’t reached any great heights over the last few weeks. Spurs are excellent value in this clash.

Brighton vs Nottingham (Wednesday 5:30am AEDT)
Brighton’s impressive early season form has dropped away a touch since the departure of manager Graham Potter. They’ve lost their last two league matches and haven’t troubled the scorers in either. Likewise, Forest have failed to find the back of the net and enter this game having scored only once from their last three outings. On current form, this has the makings of a low-scoring game.

Crystal Palace vs Wolves (Wednesday 6:15am AEDT)
Wolves snapped a three-game losing streak with a win over the struggling Forest on the weekend. They scored just once but that was enough on this occasion, such is the horror form their opponents were in. They travel to Selhurst Park where they’ll face a much tougher opposition in Palace who have lost only once in their past five league matches. The home side look to be the play here.

Bournemouth vs Southampton (Thursday 5:30am AEDT)
The Cherries have been in terrific form since their humiliating 9-0 defeat against Liverpool. They’re now six league matches without a loss and have a 2-2-1 record at home this season. They welcome the Saints to Vitality Stadium on Thursday morning who have picked up only one point from their last five matches. The Cherries look to be the value in this one.

Brentford vs Chelsea (Thursday 5:30am AEDT)
Brentford bounced back from their embarrassing defeat against the Magpies with a rock solid 2-0 win over Brighton. Ivan Toney continued his blistering form with a brace, taking him up to eight goals for the season. Meanwhile, Chelsea made it four league wins from as many games under Graham Potter when they defeated Aston Villa on the weekend. They’re absolutely flying at the minute and should be too strong for the Bees.

Fulham vs Aston Villa (Friday 5:30am AEDT)
Fulham struggled on offence in the two matches without Aleksandar Mitrovic, but he returned last start and made an immediate impact. They’ve only lost twice when Mitrovic has played more than 45 minutes and both of those were on the road. Fulham will fancy their chances on their home deck against a Villa outfit that has only two wins to their name this season. I like their odds of getting the job done.

Leicester vs Leeds (Friday 6:15am AEDT)
Both Leicester and Leeds would be extremely disappointed with their form this season, as they’ve won just three matches combined heading into Matchweek 12. Defence is a primary concern for both outfits, which should make for an entertaining and high-scoring clash on Friday morning. Over 2.5 goals looks to be the play here.
