Chelsea will be looking to bounce back after an embarrassing loss to Everton on Matchday 35, with just one win from their last four games Chelsea need to steady the ship. With Arsenal only three points behind and Tottenham five points behind, Chelsea haven’t yet secured third place. Wolverhampton’s season can’t end quick enough, coming into this fixture on the back of three consecutive losses to Brighton, Burnley and Newcastle.
Chelsea’s biggest advantage in this clash is the discrepancy in their scoring power in comparison to Wolves. Chelsea are the third most prolific attack in the Premier League (68 goals) with Wolverhampton ranking seventeenth (33 goals). Wolves haven’t scored in their last three games and it’s going to be difficult for them to turn their form around against the third best defence in the Premier League, with Chelsea having only conceded 29 goals this season.
Chelsea have had the best of Wolves for quite some time, with a 9-3-3 head to head record in their last fifteen Premier League clashes against Wolverhampton. Wolves simply don’t have the attacking firepower to compete with the quality that Chelsea possess. Chelsea have had an underwhelming fortnight with a draw against Man United and a loss to Everton, and will be looking to bounce back in a big way.
Liverpool vs Tottenham
Sunday 8th May, 4.45am (AEST)
It’s the battle of the chasers as Spurs travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool in the match of the weekend. Tottenham are two points behind fourth placed Arsenal, while Liverpool trail league leaders Manchester City by just one point. Spurs had a firm grasp on fourth place however with a defeat to Brighton and a draw with Brentford in their last three games, Tottenham are now chasing their North London rivals.
Liverpool’s near perfect form in the 2022 has brought life into a title race that at one point was at once stage separated by twelve points. Liverpool are unbeaten in 2022, with a 13-2-0 record, possessing the best attack in the Premier League (86 goals) and the second best defence (22 goals against). Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota occupy the top five goal scorers while Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson are the top three assist leaders in the Premier League.
Liverpool have won six out of their last eight Premier League matchups against Tottenham, with Spurs’ last Premier League win over the Reds coming back in October of 2017. The Reds have been irrepressible since the turn of the calendar year, and will be full of confidence taking on a Tottenham outfit that has failed to beat some mediocre sides in the last two weeks. Liverpool will be too strong in this encounter.
Leicester vs Everton
Sunday 8th May, 11.00pm (AEST)
Everton’s stirring 1-0 win over Chelsea last week has flipped the relegation battle on its head with Burnley and Leeds occupying 16th & 17th place on 34 points, while Everton are just two points behind with a game in hand on both sides. The Toffees head to the King Power Stadium to take on a Leicester side who will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing 3-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham on Matchday 35.
Everton have been awful in all facets of the game this season, having the fifteenth ranked defence (55 goals conceded) and the 15th ranked attack (35 goals). A major lack of consistency is one of the major reasons why Everton are battling this season, the Toffees have a 4-1-11 record this year and haven’t won back to back games since September 2021.
Leicester have enough variety forward of centre to challenge a poor Everton defence, with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, James Maddison and Youri Tielemans. Everton know that their Premier League hopes are on the line in this clash, but it’s difficult to see them producing quality performances in back to back games.
