2021 Wimbledon Finals Preview and Betting Tips
Women’s Final
It’s been an extremely impressive fortnight of tennis for the world #1 Ash Barty. The Australian hadn’t played on her preferred surface since 2019 before this tournament, but has managed to dominate her way through the draw to drop just one set en route to the final, which came in her first round victory against Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro. Barty, a 1x grand slam winner (French Open 2019), has already achieved her best ever result on the grass at Wimbledon, but will be desperate to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish on early Sunday morning (Australian time).
Equally impressive in the tournament so far has been the play of world #13 Karolina Pliskova. The big-hitting Czech has also only dropped one set on her way to the final, which came in her most recent clash against Belarus’s Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-final where she trailed by a set to love. Pliskova has now reached the final of a grand slam for the second time in her stellar career, with the only other run to the final coming at the US Open in 2016.
The pair of Barty and Pliskova have been frequent opponents on the WTA Tour over the past couple of years, playing each other six times in the last five years, with Barty winning four of those meetings including each of the last three. However, the Czech won their only meeting on grass during that span, defeating the Aussie two sets to love at Nottingham in 2016.
Both women will be full of confidence after the fantastic fortnight of tennis they’ve put together to make it to the final two, but unfortunately only one will prevail on Saturday night. It should be a really entertaining hour or so on centre court and Pliskova will be every chance of pinching a set on the back of her big serve, but we just feel that the experience in these moments coupled with the variety of shot Barty can play will see her salute, most likely in three sets.
Men’s Final
World #1 Novak Djokovic came into this tournament in incredible form on the back of his French Open win, and there’s certainly been no let up with the Serbian winning all but one of his matches in straight sets en route to yet another grand slam final. Djokovic lost the very first set of the tournament against British youngster Jack Draper, which means since then he’s won an incredible 18 sets on the spin.
Matteo Berrettini, who’s Italy’s #1 ranked player, is enjoying the best season of his career thus far with the 25-year-old holding the third best winning percentage on the ATP Tour behind Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Berrettini has won 32 of his 38 matches this year including 6/6 at Wimbledon to reach the first grand slam final of his career. The Italian has now won 11 matches in a row and seven have those have been in straight sets, which shows just how dominant he has been over the last month.
Djokovic will be hoping for a similar result to the one that transpired when the pair last met, which was in the quarter finals of the French Open just a little over one month ago. The Serbian won that encounter by three sets to one to improve his career head-to-head record to 2-0 against the Italian, with their only other meeting coming in 2019 at the ATP Finals where Djokovic won in straight sets.
19x grand slam winner, Novak Djokovic, will start his seventh career Wimbledon final over as the very short favourite against Matteo Berrettini who’s making his first appearance at this stage in a major. Experience and consistency should see Djokovic negotiate the win once again on Sunday night, but the play of Berrettini this season should be enough to see him pinch at least one set.
Value: Djokovic 3-1 ($3.50)
