A-League Round 22 Betting Tips
Newcastle Jets vs Brisbane Roar
Friday 21st May 7.05pm (AEST)
It’s been a season to forget so far for the Newcastle Jets. They sit dead last on the A-League table with a 3-5-14 record on the season, not having won a game since all the way back on the 21st of February, a streak that has now spanned 13 games. They have scored just 18 goals this season which is six lower than the next fewest in the league and they haven’t scored multiple goals in their last four games.
The Brisbane Roar have a lot to play for on Friday night as they currently sit just inside the top six with just a few games to go. They are level on points with the 7th placed Wanderers and sit just three points ahead of a pack of three trailing teams in the Phoenix, Glory and Western United. They will be absolutely desperate for a win here and thankful to the scheduling gods that they get a golden opportunity here.
The Roar have been extremely solid over the past few months, losing just two of their last 10 games including four wins in that stretch. They have faced the Jets twice this season already, securing one win and one draw so far. I expect them to win this one with so much on the line.
Wellington Phoenix vs Western United
Saturday 22nd May 2.05pm (AEST)
This is a super interesting clash between two teams whose season could be over with a loss on Saturday. Wellington and Western United both sit on 28 points, three points outside of the top six and desperately need to win to keep their hopes of playing finals alive. Western United were in the box seat to make finals but a four game losing streak has seen them drop all the way to 10th on the ladder.
Wellington has had the opposite turn of form. They have a 3-4-0 record in their last seven games and have re-entered the mix for finals contention. In their last seven games alone, they boast wins over Adelaide, Perth and their opponents on Saturday, Western United.
They will start as firm favourites on Saturday and it’s hard to look past them considering the two teams form at the moment. Wellington have been arguably the best side in the competition outside of Melbourne City over the past month while Western United have been arguably the worst. Western United are the 2nd worst team away from home this season with just a 2-1-8 record, so the trip to Wellington doesn’t bode well.
Melbourne City FC vs Central Coast Mariners
Saturday 22nd May 7.05pm (AEST)
It’s hard to fault anything about Melbourne City’s season to date. They are home in the race for the premiership, locking up top spot on the table as they now sit 9 points clear of their nearest opponents with just three games to play and a massive goal difference advantage. They are undefeated through their last nine games, winning six of them and have lost just 5 of 22 total games this season.
After leading the league for the first half of the season, the Mariners have dropped away a touch, but a win on the weekend over the Jets propelled them back into 2nd place. They have lost just two of their last nine games, but have only two wins in that time as well. A win here over the top side in the competition would likely secure 2nd place and the bye that comes with it in the first round of the finals.
I really like the value of the Mariners here. Melbourne City gave up a 2-2 draw to the Wellington Phoenix on the weekend at home, so it’e pretty clear they have slightly taken their foot off the gas pedal and will be keen to cruise through their final three games avoiding injuries and resting key players for the finals campaign. There is a lot more on the line for the Mariners, who would even be extremely happy with just one point. I like the value for the Mariners double chance here.
