Just five weeks remain in the 2020-21 Hyundai A-League season and the battle for the premiership and the top six is starting to heat up. Matchday 20 kicks off on Thursday night with the Melbourne Victory taking on the Brisbane Roar from 7.05pm and as usual, we have our three best bets of the week below.
A-League Matchday 20 Betting Tips
Melbourne Victory vs Macarthur
Thursday 6th May 7.05pm (AEST)
What a ride it’s been for the Mebourne Victory so far this season. They are one of the most successful clubs in A-League history, winning the championship on four different occasions. The 2020-21 season has been by far their worst season in history, currently sitting second last on the EPL table with a 4-3-12 record through 19 games. Their year is done and dusted and at this stage, they’ll just be playing for pride.
Macarthur have been solid in their first season in the A-League, maintaining a, 8-5-7 record and currently sitting in 5th place on the table. They have drawn their last three games in a row to Newcastle, Melbourne City and Perth but get a fantastic opportunity to cement a place in the top six with a clash against the struggling Victory here.
This will be the first time in A-League history that these two teams have played. They were obviously supposed to play earlier in the season but due to the schedule being altered by COVID-19, they will play back to back games this Thursday and next Friday night. Absolutely love the value of Macarthur here. It’s easy to bet against the Victory at the moment, they are just an absolute rabble and Macarthur skipper Mark Milligan will no doubt have his men fired up to compete against his old side.
Adelaide United vs Wellington Phoenix
Friday 7th May 7.35pm (AEST)
Adelaide United will host the Wellington Phoenix on Friday night in the A-League as they attempt to cement a spot in the top four heading into finals. United currently sit in fourth place with a 9-4-6 record and have a game in hand on the majority of the other top six teams. They have lost just 2 of their last 12 games and have bene fantastic at home this season, maintaining a 6-2-1 record at Coopers Stadium.
Wellington have been just average on the road this season with just a 3-3-3 record. In their first clash against Adelaide this season, they captured a 2-1 win, but that game was played in Wollongong.
Adelaide United are in great form at the moment and at home, I think they should be far too strong for the Phoenix here. They have lost at home to Wellington just once since the 2014 season. Back them to win at decent odds here.
Newcastle Jets vs Sydney FC
Saturday 8th May 5.05pm (AEST)
Saturday night will see the Newcastle Jets square off against Sydney FC. The Jets now sit dead last on the A-League table, having lost their last two games on the trot and having secured just two total points in their last 11 games. They were beaten 2-1 by Sydney when they met earlier in the season and will be looking to win some pride back on Saturday evening.
Sydney FC sit in 3rd place on the A-League table with a 8-7-5 record but have won just one of their last five games. They have also only lost one of those five games, so their form at the moment is just average. They could potentially move into the top two with a win here depending on how the Mariners mid-week clash goes.
Can’t see this game going any other way than a Sydney FC win here. The Jets are an absolute rabble at the moment, having lost 10 of their last 12 games. While Sydney aren’t in world beating form, they are certainly playing good enough to beat a Newcastle team that even lost to the Melbourne Victory just a couple of weeks ago.
