Champions League Matchday 5 Betting Tips
Liverpool vs Ajax
Wednesday, 7am AEDT
Liverpool got off to a fantastic start in Group D with three wins (all to nil) in their opening three fixtures. The Reds had their first major stumble in the ‘group of death’ last week when they went down 2-0 at home to Atalanta, so they’ll be looking to rectify that performance this Wednesday morning.
Ajax managed just one point from their first two UCL games this campaign, but took care of business twice against Midtjylland to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage well and truly alive. Ajax have had a couple of fantastic deep runs in the UCL in recent seasons, meaning an early group stage exit would be a horrible result for their club and a huge step backwards.
Liverpool got the chocolates when these clubs met in Matchday 1, defeating Ajax 1-0 on the road thanks to a Tagliafico own goal. The home side certainly had their chances in that match and will have a fantastic opportunity to return serve when they take on a heavily-depleted Liverpool outfit this time around. Liverpool were horrible against Atalanta last weekend and weren’t much better in the EPL on the weekend, so we’re liking Ajax to get something out of this and potentially cause another boilover at Anfield.
Atalanta vs FC Midtjylland
Wednesday, 7am AEDT
Atalanta caused one of the upsets of the competition so far when they defeated Liverpool 2-0 on the road last week. What’s truly bizarre is the fact that they were thumped 5-0 at home by the Reds just a couple of weeks prior. Nonetheless, Atalanta are now in the box seat to finish second in the group as long as they continue on their current form trend.
FC Midtjylland were introduced into their first ever Champions League campaign by being put alongside three champion clubs in what’s been labelled as the ‘group of death’. The Danish club is yet to record a point from four fixtures, managing to find the back of the net on just two occasions.
Atalanta get the perfect opportunity to back up their Liverpool triumph with a big win at home against an inferior outfit in Midtjylland. As it stands, Group D is incredibly close as we approach the final two Matchday’s, so we’re expecting Atalanta to put their foot down here to improve their goal difference by as much as possible.
Borussia Monchengladbach vs Inter Milan
Wednesday, 7am AEDT
Borussia Monchengladbach are a quality Bundesliga outfit but have certainly exceeded expectations so far in the UCL. They’re undefeated in four fixtures to currently top Group B, which includes the likes of Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
If Borussia Monchengladbach have been the overachievers in Group B, then Inter Milan have certainly been the underachievers. They’ve accumulated just two points from their four games to date and would need a miracle to advance to the knockout stages from here.
It’s top vs bottom in Group B for Matchday 5 and surprisingly it’s bottom who are the clear favourites. Yes, you could make the case that M’gladbach might be a touch complacent knowing they’ve just about shored up a spot in the Round of 16 with a game to spare, however, they’re in sizzling form at the moment and getting 3x your money for a win at home is too good to pass up in our opinion.
