The PGA Tour season continues this week as we head to TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas for the annual Shriners Hospital for Children Open! See our full preview and betting tips for the event, kicking off on Thursday night below.
Shriners Hospital for Children Open Betting Tips
Some of the top players in the world will be back in action this week after a slow few weeks in the PGA Tour. While the Corales and Sanderson Farms events over the last two weekends provided some highlights, they lacked real star power, but that is set to change this week with the Shriners boasting a $7,000,000 prize-pool.
The Field
Bryson DeChambeau headlines a solid field, with the world No.6 set to make his first appearance since capturing the U.S. Open title at Winged Foot three weeks ago. DeChambeau won’t be the top ranked player playing this weekend though, with that honour going to world No.5 and the only other player to win a major in 2020 so far, Collin Morikawa.
Alongside those two standouts is the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, Harris English, Matthew Wolff, Jason Day, Paul Casey and Rickie Fowler.
Spaniard Sergio Garcia claimed his first PGA Tour title since the 2017 Masters at the Sanderson Farms last week and he’ll be back once again in Las Vegas. Kevin Na picked up his second Shriners Open trophy last year and will also be back to defend his title.
The Course
One of the best things about the annual Shriners Hospital for Children Open is without doubt the scenic course. The desert of Las Vegas with its open spaces and rock mountains provides a gorgeous backdrop for what is traditionally a pretty easy golf course for PGA Tour players.
The championship course sets up as a Par 71 at just over 7,255 yards, designed by Bobby Weed with Fuzzy Zoeller serving as a consultant. The course opened back in 1992 and has played host to a PGA Tour event since it’s inception.
A winning score at TPC Summerlin is usually somewhere in the low twenties under par, and player will likely need to go low again this week to give themselves a chance, especially with a fairly star-studded field in attendance.
Predictions
Bryson DeChambeau
Tough to go past the big bomber this week after his fantastic win at the U.S. Open just a few weeks ago. He has been playing on another level since the PGA Tour returned from the COVID-19 break. Since that time, DeChambeau has played in 11 tournaments, racking up six top 10 finishes to go along with two wins at the Charles Schwab Challenge and of course, the U.S. Open. DeChambeau is also a winner at TPC Summerlin, claiming the 2018 Shriners event in a one stroke win over Patrick Cantlay. DeChambeau starts as a heavy favourite but his form is undeniable at the moment. Should be in the mix come Sunday.
Patrick Cantlay
Cantlay won the Shriners Hospital for Children Open back in 2017 but now has some demons to vanquish after finishing 2nd for the last two years straight. In 2018, the world No.13 finished just one shot behind Bryson DeChambea and last season, he lost to Kevin Na in a playoff. In three appearances at TPC Summerlin, Cantlay has racked up two 2nd place finishes and a win. Pretty hard to argue with that resume.
Dark Horse – Chesson Hadley
Hadley missed the cut at the Sanderson Farms Championship last week but is in good shape to bounce back at one of his favourite courses, TPC Summerlin. Hadley has six total appearances at the Shriners and has only missed the cut once. In those other five trips, he has racked up results of 5th, 62nd, 4th, 7th and 18th. Started the 2021 PGA Tour season well, with a T14 at the Safeway Open and a T51 at the U.S. Open. Long odds but a decent look this week.
