It’s an extremely busy time of the year for sport lovers with so much going on at the moment. The 2020 Australian Open is the next big thing about to get underway and will kick off on Monday, January 20th. As always, our experts have scoured the markets to find you the best plays for the tournament, which you can find below. Here, our concentration is on the men’s side of the draw, however, we will also be providing a preview and betting tips for the women’s draw in a separate article. Good luck to everyone following!
Men’s Australian Open Betting Tips
Outright Winner
Always a popular and fun market to have a crack at is the outright winner. This year it will once again be Novak Djokovic who is the heavy favourite to win the title and for good reason. The Serbian is arguably the greatest hard-court player of all time and has won a record seven Australian Open (AO) titles. He is very short odds ($2.20) to make it number eight, but you would have to be very brave to bet against him on current form. He’s won all six of his matches this year and recently led his country to a title at the new ATP Cup, which will have him in really good stead for the next fortnight of competition. In our opinion, the only player we can see testing the Joker over five sets is Russian gun Daniil Medvedev ($9), so we’ll be backing both before proceedings get underway in Melbourne.
Value: Daniil Medvedev $9
Quarter 1 Winner
Another market we’re keen to have something on is the Quarter 1 Winner at Sportsbet. The odds-on favourite to win this quarter of the draw is Rafael Nadal ($1.57), however, we’re keen to oppose the great man. The AO is his least successful Grand Slam and he’s failed to win his quarter in six of the past 10 years. The hard courts at the AO are the least forgiving on the body and won’t get any kinder to the now 33-year-old. Instead, we fancy Austrian superstar Dominic Thiem to progress from quarter 1 and make it to the final four. The 26-year-old world #5 is entering the prime of his career and while his AO statistics are only modest (10-6 W/L), we believe he has an excellent opportunity to make a deep run in 2020 from his kind draw.
Quarter 2 Winner
The third and final market we see some value in is the Quarter 2 Winner at Sportsbet. Leading the favouritism here is young Russian superstar Daniil Medvedev. He’s had an incredible 12 or so months and comes into this tournament ranked #4 in the world as a result. Medvedev made the final of the US Open last year and has already proven to be one of the best hardcourt players on the Tour. He’s just 23 years of age and is 4-1 from his five matches so far this year and has been dealt a really favourable draw to make a deep run into the second week of the AO. We believe that getting anything around the $1.80 mark or better for this young gun to make it to the semi’s is very nice value.
